LIVE AT HY-VEE

Liana Werner-GrayJoin us in the Hy-Vee Club Room for an exciting food-filled hour.  Leading off the show we’ll welcome to Fairfield, Liana Werner-Gray, founder of The Earth Diet.  Liana, along with our health coach, Emily Rose Shaw, will help you set the proper parameters so the holiday season is both delicious and healthy.
Emily Rose Shaw
The stellar Indian Hills Culinary Crew featuring Kelli Kuenzler, Savannah Strode, and Jesse Juran will prepare a Thanksgiving feast of spiced cranberry dip, brussels sprouts, basil garlic green beans, and turkey stir fry.

Noah LoinNoah Loin is bringing lots of his rock’n raw chocolates for us to taste.  His cacao-powered business is really rock’n, and I can’t wait to hear about it.

Tom Allen will play us a tune, and share his rather dry wit.  Beverly Merson is back with Cinebites, providing insight into a food film we should put on our “watch” list, and I really hope that is about it!

A really exciting 60 minutes of radio at Hy-Vee this Wednesday.  Come on by.

Hot ChocolateThanksgiving should be next week, right?  It feels a little out-of-place so early in the month.  Anyone else feeling weird about celebrating Thanksgiving this year?  Maybe it crept up on me too fast?  I don't know.
So out of sorts about the holiday, I started to think about my favorite Thanksgiving memories.  All I could recall were several very nasty afternoons and evenings with major indigestion or the time our son, Jacob, made his cousin cry because he told her that the turkey on her plate was alive until someone killed it so she could have a Thanksgiving feast.  No fond memories?  Finally, I recalled a wonderful Festa del Ringraziamento (Thanksgiving) in Italy.  Friends felt pity for us having to celebrate so far from home so they invited us over for pizza!

Indian Hills culinary studentsHow about the Indian Hills culinary crew helping me out of my Thanksgiving blues?  That's what is on tap for GREAT TASTE on Wednesday live from Hy-Vee's Club Room.  Curt Goudy and Sara Valentine have the spirit.  They are going to show you how to make homemade egg nog, a shelf-stable hot chocolate mix, marshmallows for the hot chocolate, sweet potatoes or your Thanksgiving campfire, plus a number of other beverage concoctions guaranteed to make your holiday entertaining easier and more fun.

A Great Taste Thanksgiving-REBROADCAST

Reminder: This show is a reTurkey in the Dockbroadcast so we won't be serving a meal in the studio!  All links in the blog post are up-to-date.

The show this week features a look at the wide variety of dishes that can make up a modern  Thanksgiving table.  We have guests galore starting off the hour with Jeanne Sauvage, author of The Art of Gluten-Free Baking blog.  Jeanne has been baking gluten-free for over 10 years, and will help you make a gluten-free dressing for the turkey and simplify the art of preparing a pan gravy.

How about a raw foods holiday banquet?  Joining us again from the already snowbound state of Minnesota is Susan Powers, creator of rawmazing.com, and author of Rawmazing Desserts and Rawmazing Holidays 2010.  Susan's ever-evolving raw food philosophy might surprise you.

Great Taste Celebrates Thanksgiving

Baking MessThanksgiving comes once a year.  Too bad there is always such a mess that's created during the furious preparation for that quintessential "eating" holiday.  All that cooking and baking takes plenty of measuring cups, bowls, the Cuisinart and other items. The good news is all the deliciousness that comes out of that mess.

Truth is cooking always means cleaning. Good cooks clean as much as possible as they move from one step of preparing a meal to the next.  The results are the cooking area is less cluttered, prep goes quicker, and the final cleanup is less grueling.  Or if you are lucky to live in a multi-person household, perhaps "kitchen rules" work in your favor?  If you cook, you don't have to clean.  I love that one.  Unfortunately, it doesn't always hold up.

Lyrical Venus Eats Music

I'm on vacation in Colombia this week, but thanks to the powers of the interwebs, I am able to beam you a delicious feast for your ears all the way from Medellin.

This carefully crafted musical meal may make more sense if you check out the playlist, but once you get home, and after some dancing in the kitchen, if you're hungry, there are potatoes, cranberries, celery, nutritious whole grains, even a few pistachios and cupcakes!

Happy Thanksgiving from Lyrical Venus! Tune in Tuesday 11/23 from 9-10am Central and don't miss a (sound)bite!

P.S. Musical feasts are for listening only, please don't eat your iPod.

"In All Things, Give Thanks"

During this season of Thanksgiving, many of us strive to be more grateful for all the blessings in our lives – health, home, food, family, friends, the gifts of wisdom we have received, etc. – but Master Jesus and many other spiritual luminaries have asked us to take gratitude to a bold new level, by giving thanks in all things. But is it really possible for us regular folks to be grateful when "bad" things happen? During this week's show, we'll explore the power of this profound practice and give examples of how we might make it part of our lives. I hope you can join me, tomorrow morning at 9:00AM Central time.

Blessings,

Jonas
