The Great American Songbook, Week 1: Ella

One of only a hanElladful of recording artists so beloved she usually needs no last name, Ella made her huge musical mark by bringing together disparate elements of American culture, as Frank Rich put it so succinctly: "Here was a black woman popularizing urban songs often written by immigrant Jews to a national audience of predominantly white Christians."

Not easy to find someone more responsible for the popularity of the music we now refer to as the Great American Songbook.  They can't take that away from her.  Because with this immortal artist, anything goes, even if it is only a paper moon.  Which is why our first show of this series features the work of the great Ella Fitzgerald.

Only at the Wildflowers Cafe.

Only on KRUU-FM.

Swing of 2013

On today's edition of That Righteous Jive I'll be playing for you three of my favorite swing albums of 2013.

The first is the self-titled debut album by Bella Donna, a quartet from Springfield, MO. Together the play a fantastic blend of gypsy jazz, swing & folk. "Bella Donna is a jazz ensemble influenced by the Ozarks. The creak of tree limbs in the winter, the summer sounds of cicadas, and the rolling hills off highway 65 have helped influence their sound to create what they like to call "Ozark Jazz".

Secondly, we've got Jelly Doll Circus by Hippocampus Jass Gang, a seven-piece string ensemble from Montpellier, France. They play a mix of both traditional New Orleans-style and gyspy jazz, along with a nice heaping of folk and blues. This is their third album together.

Last, but certainly not least, we've got Jump, Jive & Wail by Louis Louis Louis, a quartet from Leeds, UK. "Playing classic swing, jump-jive, ska and red-hot rhythm & blues, Louis Louis Louis are guarenteed to get your feet tapping and your legs flapping! You can expect to hear thumping slap bass, honking saxophone, raucous four-part vocal harmonies and a driving piano boogie." They named their group after three of their main influences: Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and Louis Prima.

Stream it live May 13, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Contemporary Jazz & Swing

On this Tuesday's edition of That Righteous Jive I'll be featuring two of my favorite jazz & swing albums of 2013. The first is the self-titled debut from Bella Donna (top), a quartet from the Ozarks who plays a beautiful blend of gypsy jazz, swing and folk. From their bandcamp page: "Bella Donna is a jazz ensemble influenced by the Ozarks. The clacking of a tree limb in the middle of winter, the summer sound of cicadas and the rolling hills off of highway 65 help influence their sound to create what they like to call "Ozark Jazz"."

Secondly we've got The John Brothers Piano Company Quintet by The John Brothers Piano Company (left), an Oakland-based duo began in early 2010 by John Morgan and John Thatcher Boomer, who would alternate on the piano. As time passed Boomer switched to playing the clarinet and the group gained a drummer, trumpeter and bassist. For their first album as a quintet they re-worked older songs by The John Brothers as well as creating brand new material. The result is one of the best contemporary jazz albums I've ever heard. Be sure to check it out January 28th, 5-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.

Afro-Beat, Brass & Swing of 2013

On this Tuesday's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be listening to some great afro-funk, brass and swing--all from albums released this year.

I'll be starting off with the self-titled debut album from Cherimoya: a five-piece "apocalyptic funk" outfit from Portland, Oregon. "Combining elements of classic soul with dark funk, rock and afro-beat, Cherimoya's music is the perfect soundtrack to a post-apocalyptic dance party."

After that we'll be checking out debut albums from both Brass Knuckle Brass Band (a New Orleans-style street funk group from Australia) and Pitchblak Brass Band (a ten-piece band from Brooklyn that blends together hip-hop, jazz, funk and rock).

Last, but not least, we'll be listening to some swing featuring the debut album from Smerins Anti-Social ClubPrimordial Cordial. We'll also hear from Jazzlight and Smoking Time Jazz Club. Stream it live November 12th, 5-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.
