Chris Isaak on Roots Rock Roadhouse

I've been a fan of Chris Isaak since his debut album came out in the early 80's.  There are only handfull of artists in the world that have dared to be so derivitive for so long. For many its been career suicide but Isaak has stood on the shoulders of the 60's giants and raised the bar high for the modern rockabilly-pop genre.   The jangling guitars, the soaring Presley/Orbison style vocals rushing through stellar melodies bathed in dark brooding lyrics make him a one-of-kind, modern day crooner.  He's also an amazing live performer who punctuates his songs with side splitting, dry humor and spontaneous tall tales.  The consumate showman, songwriter and vocalist, he'll be the focus of our show this week. See you there!

New EP from the Stray Birds on Roots Rock Roadhouse

Our feature this week is the new EP by the Stray Birds called Echo Sessions. Its a collection of covers songs recorded, live in the studio, in one day.  Songs include: When I Stop Dreaming, I'll Be Your San Antone Rose and I Wish It Would Rain.

The Stray Birds are three voices raised in harmony above the sound of wood and strings. A sound drawn from American folk music traditions, spun  with subtlety and grace.

Our feature this week is the new album: Linda Ronstadt: Duets.  This 15 song CD spotlights Ronstadt's most memorable collaborations including duets with James Taylor, Don Henley, Emmylou Harris, Carl Jackson, JD Souther and Dolly Parton.  The album was released in conjunction with Ronstadt's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on April 10. The honor recognizes her exceptional musical legacy, which has earned 10 Grammy® Awards and two Academy of Country Music Awards.  Ronstadt won her first Grammy in 1976 for a cover of Hank Williams’ “I Can’t Help It (If I’m Still In Love With You)” that featured Emmylou Harris and appeared on what many consider her masterwork, Heart Like a Wheel (1974).

New John Gorka album on Roots Rock Roadhouse

This week's feature is the new album by John Gorka called: Bright Side Of Down. Gorka has been called the preeminent singer-songwriter of the New Folk Movement.

I saw a stranger with your hair
Tried to make her give it back
So I could send it off to you
Maybe Federal Express
'Cause I know you'd miss it

I saw another with your eyes
The flash just turned my head
I went to try them on for size
But they looked the other way
And they wouldn't listen

Mary Gauthier's new live album on Roots Rock Roadhouse

Mary Gauthier's  new album Live At Blue Rock is our feature this week and its a dandy.  Gauthier (pronounced 'Go-shay')  is an acclaimed Nashville singer-songwriter who has been lauded by Bob Dylan among others.

"Often described as a ‘truth teller’ rather than just a singer-songwriter Mary Gauthier has always chose to write about challenging and harrowing subjects across her career but they only reflect the life she led and the people she encountered along the way."

Her new album contains some of her best songs from the past ten years. They are recorded live with verve, haunting vocals and gut wrenching fiddle treatments by Tania Elizabeth. We'll also hear songs from Ellis who will be appearing at Cafe Paradiso this Saturday night.
