All Hail The Mighty Sceptres!

Two incredible albums dropped today.

The first I have been anticipating for a long time now, it's the debut album of The Mighty Sceptres, a collaboration between guitarist Nick Radford and singer Angeline Morrison. On All Hail The Mighty Sceptres! they effortlessly and beautifully capture the sound and attitude of 60's soul, from funk to doo-wop to R&B.

The second is one that I wasn't expecting but am just as excited about, it's a new album by rapper Ghostface Killah, Sour Soul, where he's backed by Toronto jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD, who lay down some great 70's blaxploitation style beats for the Ghost to flow over.

Featured This Week - Half Moon Run, ZZ Ward, and New Politics

This week's playlist features new artists including Half Moon Run, ZZ Ward, New Politics, and Houndmouth.

Here's a review that I posted on the About the Music Facebook page.

by Robert ReederDevon Portielje

About the Music - KRUU-FM

Dark Eyes is the debut studio album by the Canadian indie rock band Half Moon Run, released through the Canadian label Indica Records and distributed through the Glassnote Entertainment Group.

It’s been awhile since I’ve been so intrigued by a band. I heard Half Moon Run’s single Call Me in the Afternoon while I was traveling on the West Coast. It was one of those times when you hear something new on the radio and immediately sit up straight and go, who is that?! I was taken by the vocal work of Devon Portielje, the exceptionally clean and precise harmonies, the creative arrangements and the powerful and tasteful melding of spacious atmosphere inside pounding tribal spear-chucking rhythm. Three of the four members of Half Moon Run are drummers which may explain a few things about the energy in their work.

As soon as I got home I purchased their debut album, Dark Eyes and was very happy to discover that the single I had heard was not a flook. The album, produced by Nygel Asselin of the Nimbus School of Recording Arts, is packed with solid songwriting, riveting vocal performances, top-notch production values and an overall feel and sound that is well defined and quite original, and it grows on you! The more I hear it, the more I like it!

Indie for an Independent Station

What could be more appropriate? We're back and we have the best new indie music of 2013. Join us in the afterglow of Fairfest and we'll turn you on to what you'll hear next year.

Listen to Shoegazer anytime by logging onto live365.com and typing Shoegazer Ca Va (omit the ?) in the search window. Grazie mille!

River People Revolt

With apologies to the River People out there, Shoegazer's next two installments are light on the folk and shading towards New Wave with a healthy dose of late summer pop thrown in for good measure. We've got newly minted tracks from Wild Nothing, The Raveonettes, Freelance Whales, Grizzly Bear, Kisses, Cat Power- and as always- we have a host of new bands for your perusal, including Blonde Summer, Blonds (theme developing?), Ombre, Pure Bathing Culture, WIN WIN and many more. Saturday evenings at 6 and Thursday mornings at 9. Barefoot people welcome.

Doing It Right

Shoegazer is taking liberties with all the 80's-inspired tracks we have in store for you over the next two installments of the show, but we feel excused for our saccharine leanings as the artists pedalling the era's sound have found ways to freshen it up while retaining its ubiquitous optimism. We've also got a healthy dose of folksy realism to balance things out. On deck is new music from Wild Nothing, Passion Pit, Purity Ring, Western Affairs, Blonde Summer, Sea Wolf, Twin Shadow, Sleep Party People and many more. Saturday evenings at 6 and again Thursday mornings at 9. For that happy, end of summer lethargy.

Listen to Shoegazer anytime at live365.com. Just type Shoegazer Ca Va (no ?) in the search window.

Veritably Unknown

Shoegazer engages in a little blatant promotion this week and next. On deck are two tracks from little known band Tuff Jerks, the project of local musician Jason Hennesy. His self-titled DIY (that's Do It Yourself for the uninitiated) album is one that defies neat encapsulation- it's nuanced in a way that's unusual to hear in seminal projects. In addition we've got new music from Twin Shadow, Freelance Whales, Pale Seas, White Arrows, Tycho, Western Affairs, The Tallest Man On Earth and more. Saturday evening at 6 and again Thursday morning at 9. Always free but never easy.

Perpetual Vacation

It seems as though we're on permanent hiatus these days, but we made a special effort to glean the last bit of energy from our tired bones. Over the next two weeks the Shoegazer playlist includes newly minted tracks from Young Man, Beach House, Best Coast, Sigur Ros, Crocodiles, The Walkmen and many more. Tune in Saturday night at 6 and again Thursday morning at 9. Catch us before we abscond again.

Show Interrupted

Clearly lacking a sense of accountability we've been slacking in our charge of providing fresh cuts for you each week. We hope the plethora of new music, and I mean untouched and untried, we've unearthed for the next two shows will make up for the oversight. The line-up includes newly minted tracks from Beach House, Best Coast, Way Yes, Phantogram, Tycho, S. Carey (of Bon Iver), Carrousel, The Rest, Dana Buoy and many more. Saturday night at 6 and again Thursday morning at 9. Olive branch firmly extended.

Listen to Shoegazer Ca Va? anytime at live365.com. Remember to omit the question mark when searching! You can also check out our past playlists for all the music you've missed right here on kruufm.com.
