Downtempo Electronica & Jazzy Beats featuring Bonobo

On tonight's edition of After Hours we'll be checking out Migration, the new album by UK-based DJ/Producer Bonobo (AKA Simon Green). Green says Migration was inspired by “the study of people and spaces... It’s interesting how one person will take an influence from one part of the world and move with that influence and affect another part of the world. Over time, the identities of places evolve.”

We'll also hear some great jazzy beats and abstract hip hop from 2016 courtesy of some amazing record labels from all around the world, featuring: Chillhop Records (Amsterdam), Tour De Manège (Montreal), DirtyBeauty (Germany), Millennium Jazz Music (London) and more! Listen to the re-broadcast Wednesday, Jan. 25th 12:00am CST right here on KRUU radio.

New Hip-Hop and R&B

Alright folks, now that I'm done with my "Best of 2015" series it's time to dig into some new music from 2016. I've pulled out two recent releases to share with you on today's edition of Music is My Medication.

Up first we have French instrumental hip-hop producer Mounika and his new album of tasty soul-breaks Seagulls. Then, on the R&B side of things, we have legendary Chicago-based soul singer Mavis Staples, and her new M. Ward-produced album Livin' On A High Note.

On top of that, we'll hear from Staples' Grammy Award-winning album from last year: Your Good Fortune, plus some more great hip-hop released in the last couple years.

Stream it all live February 23rd, 5pm-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio. (Re-broadcast February 24th at 11pm).

Some of the music played is available for free streaming/download from the artists themselves. Check out the playlist for links: Playlist

Best of 2015: Rap & Hip-Hop

Alright folks this is the last one--the last of my "Best of 2015" series. I started out with my favorite instrumental hip-hop and now we've come full circle and it's time to bring out the rappers.

I'm a sucker for that old school boom-bap sound and 2015 was another great year for bringing back the boom-bap. We had new albums by classic rappers like Ghostface Killah, Blackalicious and Slum Village. Plus a whole set of new artists, like Sugar Tongue Slim, Myke BoganOddissee, and Chance the Rapper, keeping the tradition alive.

Stream it all live February 9th, 5pm-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.

Pax Volumi - Youngblood Brass BandHappy 2016 everyone! I can't think of a better way to start off the new year than with another round of kick-ass brass and beautiful beats, which is exactly what we'll be doing on tonight's edition of After Hours.

On the brass side of things, I'll be featuring the originators of "riot jazz", the legendary Youngblood Brass Band.

Then on the hip-hop & trip-hop side of things, I'll be featuring Bristol-based beatsmith Chairman Maf and the album he dropped last month: SOUP.

On top of that we've got a whole barrel full of great beats and brass albums from 2015. Stream it live January 2, 10pm-12am CST right her on KRUU radio.

All Hail The Mighty Sceptres!

Two incredible albums dropped today.

The first I have been anticipating for a long time now, it's the debut album of The Mighty Sceptres, a collaboration between guitarist Nick Radford and singer Angeline Morrison. On All Hail The Mighty Sceptres! they effortlessly and beautifully capture the sound and attitude of 60's soul, from funk to doo-wop to R&B.

The second is one that I wasn't expecting but am just as excited about, it's a new album by rapper Ghostface Killah, Sour Soul, where he's backed by Toronto jazz trio BADBADNOTGOOD, who lay down some great 70's blaxploitation style beats for the Ghost to flow over.

2015: Brass & Beats (But Mostly Beats)

Hot damn! A lot of great music came out this week. San Diego-based afrobeat group Sure Fire Soul Ensemble released a new 45, Rise of The East / Sunny Santa Ana, just two weeks after their amazing eponymous debut album. Dublin-based Booka Brass Band came out swinging hard with their debut EP, BBB.  Instrumental hip-hop producer Shag created a masterful ode to solitude with his new album: Hermit. Philadelphia-based downtempo hip-hop group Red Martina prove they have what it takes to perform just as well as they produce, with their new live album simply titled Live. Trip-hop producer Moderator crafted another jazzy, breezy and beat-laden landscape on his new album: The World Within. Last but not least, NYC-based instrumental hip-hop producer Blockhead finally released a digital version of his limited-edition (only 5000 CDs pressed) 2007 album Uncle Tony's Coloring Book.

On tonight's edition of The After Hours we'll be checking out all the albums above. On top of that we've got some more great jazzy instrumental hip-hop from 2015 courtesy of Esbe, Malgrin, GoodMood and Fatgyver. We'll also hear some tracks off upcoming albums from J-Live and Ghostface Killah. Stream it all live February 21, 10pm-12am CST right here on KRUU radio.

Hip-Hop & Trip-Hop of 2014 Featuring Blockhead

On tonight's edition of The After Hours we'll be listening to some more great downtempo hip-hop and trip-hop from 2014. I'll be featuring NYC-based producer Tony Simon AKA Blockhead and his new LP Bells and Whistles (out Nov. 18th).

Blockhead says that "the offerings on Bells and Whistles lay somewhere between a '70s horror movie soundtrack and what you might hear in a Turkish cafe, with boom bap roots front and center."

Continuing the direction began by their amazing album last year Fly: The Customs Prelude, HBE move further away from the traditional brass sound and even further into realms  hip-hop and soul.
