Funk of 2014

2014 has been an incredible year for funk, with new bands emerging all across North America. On this Saturday night's edition of The After Hours we'll be listening to some of my favorite funk and jazz-funk to have come out so far this year. I'll be featuring Atta Kid, a group from Oakland, California, and the debut ablum they released last week: East Basics. I've been so impressed with their debut that I'm going to be playing the whole thing in its entirety.

We'll also hear from debut albums by Beat Mosaic, Analog Son, Swift Technique, The Brooks, The Blacksmiths and Phonograff. On top of that we've got new albums by The New Mastersounds, Euro Cinema, Shawn Lee and Here Come The Mummies. Stream it live July 12th, 10pm-12am CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Jazz & Funk of 2014 Featuring Organ Explosion

On today's edition of That Righteous Jive I've got some more fresh funk for your body and soul, this time courtesy of Organ Explosion and the eponymous debut album they released earlier this year. This trio from Germany plays "melodies for millions, with the sex of funk, the dirt of the blues, a punk attitude, and the freedom of jazz."

Funk, Trip-hop & Acid Jazz On The After Hours

On this Saturday night's edition of The After Hours, we'll be starting off with some fresh funk featuring The Brooks and their debut album Adult Entertainment, which came out earlier this month.

"The Brooks were brought together by their mutual love and appreciation for authentic, vintage Funk & Soul music. Recorded live at Troublemakers studios, in Montreal Qc, during several late night studio jam sessions, The Brooks' debut album strives to bring back the old school with an infusion of fresh influences to keep your body movin'!"

Jazz & Funk of 2014

Today is a good day. Why? Because today is the release date for two albums I've been highly anticipating for a while now.

The first is by Stanton Moore, a Louisiana-born drummer, probably best know for his work with the New Orleans funk group Galactic. Today he released his fifth solo album: Conversations--his first ever straight-ahead jazz trio album. On Conversations Stanton takes a step back from his usual funky affair, so he can explore and experiment with "the subtely of swing and improvisation" adding that his new LP is both "a return to my roots and a reinvention".

The second is by Ikebe Shakedown (pronounced ee-KAY-bay), a seven piece afro-funk group based out of Brooklyn. I was blown away by their 2011 s/t debut LP, and today they finally released their second full length album: Stone By Stone. The band says their sophomore release "is a much more layered and arranged album. The self-titled debut captured the raw energy of us playing live and the new record is much more of a studio effort. Psychedelic textures weave in and out of the grooves while the horn section offers an explosive response. The songs are heavy and danceable and show our moodier, more melodic side."

On today's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be checking out some of my favorite tracks from both Conversations and Stone By Stone. On top of that we've got DopeGems, Euro Cinema and Mike Dillon--all from albums released this year. Stream it live Tuesday April 15th, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

I got some more new jazz, funk, rock and electro-swing to play for you on today's edition of That Righteous Jive.

I'll be featuring Boogie Belgique, a producer from Belgium who mixes together swing and hip-hop. We'll be checking out the new LP he released yesterday: Nightwalker (Vol. 2).

We'll also hear singles from upcoming albums by The Black KeysStanton MooreThe Mighty Sceptres and Ikebe Shakedown.

On top of that we've got Mike Dillon's Band (from the album he released today Band Of Outsiders), Rock Candy Funk PartyThe Souljazz Orchestra and Moodymann--all from albums released this year. Stream it live April 1st, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

More New Jazz, Funk & Trip-Hop

On today's edition of That Righteous Jive I've got some more new jazz, funk & trip-hop. We'll be starting off with Mike Dillon's band (left), a quartet that combines New Orleans' jazz-funk sensibility with a defintive punk-rock ethos. I was lucky enough to catch their act at Paradiso last week (they killed it) and while I was there I picked up a copy of their new LP Band Of Outsiders, which comes out next month. I'll be playing some of my favorite tracks from it.

After that we'll hear from two great funk albums, both released last week: Funkstamatic by Euro Cinema (a quartet from Amsterdam) and Therapy by The New Mastersounds (a quartet from Leeds).

Last but not least, we'll finish out the set with some downtempo trip-hop courtesy of Florida-based producer Erik Jackson. I'll be playing a few tracks from the LP he released last month: Time Enough At LastStream it live March 18th, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.
