more of the best of 2014

last year saw a better than average crop of exciting music. (iowa has got me waxing poetica--farm style).

royksoppfrom the beautifully haunting melodies of coldplay's "ghost stories" (yes, this is in contention for album of the year in my opinion), to the creative, semi-electronic pop of norway's royksopp [pictured], and across genres to acoustic masterpieces by robert plant and alt-j....2014 heard it all.

one of my blissful pleasures from last year was eric clapton & friends' ode to jj cale. it was a smooth, rolling pleasure.

u2 surprised a lot of people by showing that their passion hasn't faded as much as the years have. and the black keys continue to show us the force of a three-piece rock band.

the best of 2014 - part 1

what a great year for new music. and some old musicians making new music too.

sean lennon, charlotte no reasonable person can say what the best album of 2014 was, but it'd be hard to argue that any of these weren't among the best.

the music ranged from the raucus (foo fighters) to the subtly sublime (beck, coldplay), and featured some certified geniuses (jackson browne, leonard cohen, u2, tom petty) to possible geniuses (broken bells, tv on the radio).

then there's the guy with a little of both: john lennon's son sean [pictured with co-musician/singer charlotte kemp muhl], whose psychedlic album "midnight sun" should not be overlooked by those reviewing the past year.

there was so much great music released this last year that i'll spend 2 weeks reviewing it. so this is just part 1 folks.

the big big bang

lots of great new (dare i say it?!) pop songs have been released in the last couple years. some you've heard; most of these you haven't. but they're all singable and authentic.

sugarpie candymanto the left is the swedish swing band, sugarpie and the honeymen. their "bohemian rhapsody" is...well...it swings.

broken bell's "after the disco" was released earlier this year. they continue to be an amazing melodic force.

i start and end with 2 versions of "the big big bang"--an ode to the cosmos, vedic cosmology, and cosmic orgasms:

The big big bang, the reason i'm alive,
When all the stars collide, in this universe inside.
The big big bang.

melodic ambience from 2008

this week: time to space out.

goldfrapp

..........

tonight i play a continuous hour of ambient-like (yet very melodic) music from 2008. i'll include spacey tracks from paul mccartney's ambient band "firemen," washington dc's thievery corporation, germany's booka shade, the uk's (where so much great ambient and electronic music originates) goldfrapp (pictured), and coldplay, and an amazing performance and composition by nyc's (and nigeria's) tv on the radio. i'll even manage to make a lovely track by adele fit in.

space out, sing along...

ten years ago

red hot chili peppersten years ago, we were gathered around the old tube radio, trying to dial in some late night dj playing the newest cd by the red hot chili peppers' [left] and...well, perhaps our radios didn't have tubes then, and maybe no one was listening to radios, even back then.

[WORD: Mike Ragogna interviews chili pepper drummer Chad Smith Thu Sep 13 at 1pm.]

but my point is that 10 years ago, musically, seems like a long time. and yet, strangely, most of the artists who were making creative and interesting music then (coldplay, infected mushroom [right], the flaming lips, gorillaz, of montreal), are still making it today (two exceptions being george harrison and the one hit wonders, las ketchup).infected mushroom

this week, take a look back 10 years ago, and then ponder this: will we still be listening to these same artists 10 years from now? listen to my 2022 show to find out.

all the artists and all their songs are listed here: 2002.
