Alan Tardi and the Story of Champagne

Alan TardiTwo months ago on a stunningly beautiful October day, my wife and I met Alan Tardi at Agriturismo Il Torriglione in La Morra, a small Piedmontese village in the Langhe.  Il Torriglione sits atop one of the many distinctly rolling hills dotted with grapevines, where the dominant grape is Nebbiolo in this Barolo wine-producing zone.  The Gagliasso family makes the only wines served at the agriturismo and winemaker Luca Gagliasso's mother and sister can be found in the kitchen or greeting hungry patrons on the weekend.

Over a bottle of their Barolo, and through many courses featuring typical Piedmontese cuisine, four hours slipped away unnoticed as we talked of family, especially little girls, wine, and champagne.  Our thanks to Alan for a fantastic afternoon that we will always treasure.

Great Taste listeners may remember hearing Alan discuss his James Beard award-winning book Romancing the Vine, previously on the show.  This interview was aired last year after the release of his latest tome about champagne.

The story of Champagne is a complex one with hundreds of years of history.  It is one of the most famous wines made in France.  A wine cannot be named Champagne unless the grapes are grown in one of the 320 appellations that comprise the entire Champagne area.

Fact:  Every champagne is not extraordinary.   I bet you have experienced some like that.

Many, though, can elicit a transcendent experience.  A few years ago, Alan was allowed access to one of the most famous and secretive champagne houses.

James Beard award-winning author, Alan Tardi, joins us via Skype to discuss Piemontese cuisine, and his experiences after a decade of living in the Italian countryside.  Alan left his career as a chef in New York City, closing his fabulous Tuscan-style restaurant, Follonico, and moving to the Langhe Valley in Piemonte in 2003, a region known for its amazing grapes.

With Laurie Baumann's assistance, we'll prepare a couple of typical Piemontese delights.  Join us at 7:00 pm for a delicious and informative hour.

ON THE AIR: Get set for a jam-packed sixty minutes of Thai flavors.  Sean Hickey was our chef in-residence last week, and he turned out three sparkling dishes that wowed the live audience.

I had many great meals at Alan Tardi's restaurant Follonico on 24th street near Broadway in Manhattan before it closed in 2001.
 
Alan has since moved to Italy and in May of this year his book, Romancing the Vine, was named the winner of the James Beard Foundation's best book in the Wine and Spirits category for 2006.
