The Filmosophers Movie Talk

The 87th Academy Awards are Sunday night, 7:30 PM Central, airing on ABC. Just Oscarover 7 months ago in mid-July, Writer/Director Richard Linklater's Boyhood was released. It's innovated, groundbreaking cinema which inspired Chris and I to pick it to win Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director. This, without knowing the rest of the Oscar nomination "field". Well, the "field" turned out to be Birdman, a brilliant, also innovated film written and directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu. Birdman, along with 3-4 other notable titles, including the must-see Studio Ghibli animated film The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya are recently available on video.

Million Dollar Arm shows free Friday evening 7:30 at the FF Library. "In its own gently comical way, Million Dollar Arm plays up the misunderstandings between Hollywood and India -- as well as the mutual fascination. Jon Hamm turns on the charm and scores a home run."

We'll make the rest of our Oscar predictions, alert to new theater releases, what we've seen- including Tom Bean and Luke Poling's "affectionate, at times intoxicating" documentary Plimpton! Starring George Plimpton As Himself and more on the Filmosophers, with Chris Busch & Bruce Miller, "where we give our filmosophy of the movies and have filmosophical discussions", Fridays 12:30 PM, again Sunday mornings 11:30.

The Tale Of The Princess Kaguya: "a delicate, hand-drawn masterwork of Japanese animation, decades in the making; a lyrical, heartbreaking fable more deeply satisfying and complex than Hollywood-produced fare; a painterly epic that submerges us in a world of exquisitely drawn beauty."
