The Boxtrolls poster

This is an exciting movie weekend, with award-worthy new releases plus, "steampunk cool" The Boxtrolls comes to the Orpheum. "A family event movie from Laika, the creators of Coraline and ParaNorman that introduces audiences to a new breed of quirky, mischievous creatures."

Starring the voice talents of Ben Kingsley, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Simon Pegg and more. This is a perfect family/adult Halloween-time film: "A delightfully weird tale told in stop-motion animation; full of Rube Goldberg contraptions; bizarre angles, strange-looking characters, and a kind of fearlessness, an ability to gaze at darkness head-on; took years of blood, sweat and clay to come to life; combines heart with a streak of Roald Dahl's perversity; one to delight macabre children and adults alike."

Birdman, which is already getting Best Picture buzz: "I'm jazzed by every daring, devastating, howlingly funny, how'd-they-do-that minute in Birdman. Powered by Michael Keaton's pinballing tour de force, Alejandro González Iñárritu's cinematic whirlwind is an exhilarating high. No true movie lover would dare miss it." - Peter Travers, Rolling Stone. Also out- The Tale of Princess Kaguya. "Legendary Studio Ghibli cofounder Isao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies) revisits Japan's most famous folktale in this gorgeous, hand-drawn masterwork, decades in the making." "A thing of endless visual beauty that seems to partake in a kind of pictorial minimalism but finds staggering possibilities for beautiful variation; embodies the ineffable beauty of life on Earth that is one of the film's main themes."12:30 PM again Sunday mornings 11:30. "Laika is the new Pixar. Boxtrolls are the new minions."
