University of Iowa Press on Writers' Voices October Fridays, 1 pm and Mondays 8 am

Writers' Voices with Monica and Caroline kicks off a month of interviews with the authors and editors of the University of Iowa Press this week. Listen in Friday October 5 at 1 pm or Monday October 8 at 8 am as Holly Carver, director of Iowa’s only university press (www.uiowapress.org ), discusses how she and her staff choose books for publication.

As Director of the University of Iowa Press, Ms. Carver is responsible for acquisitions and finance for 35-40 titles per year.

In addition to acting as liaison between the Press and university administration, she works closely with in-house colleagues to coordinate all stages of editing, design, production, and marketing for each title. She is also directing the Press' ventures into electronic publishing.
Prior to joining the U of I Press in 1985, Ms. Carver was a manuscript editor at the University of Texas Press in Austin. read more »

Community radio comes to Fairfield on September 30

Work is becoming play at 405 N. 2nd Street, broadcast site for 100.1 KRUU FM, Fairfield’s new community radio station. Roland Wells, James Moore, Steve Cooperman, and Stephen Fry, the station’s Programming Committee, are on the fast track to give Fairfield’s collective voice a chance to be publicly heard. Going on air September 30, the 100-watt, low power, non-commercial, non-profit station vows to “put the unity in community,” welcoming all shows, help, ideas and people.

Emphasizing local programming, KRUU (pronounced “crew”) leaders aim to provide “an open, inclusive, diverse forum for music, creative expression, information and entertainment that encourages dialogue and community involvement.”
