On tonight's edition of The After Hours we'll be listening to my favorite math rock and post rock released last year. Featuring: Totorro, Cleft, Waking Aida, An Aesthetic Anaesthetic, Tycho and The Earth is a Man. Stream it live April 4th, 10pm-12am CDT right here on KRUU radio.
I've got a real chill playlist set up for tonight's edition of The After Hours. We'll start out with some beautiful jazz post-rock from the Serbian quartet EYOT and the amazing album they released last year: Similarity. After that we've got some new chilled-out electronica featuring three albums that just came out in the last month, plus three albums that slipped under my radar last year. Read more about the artists & albums below:
UK-based producer Kamal Manzar aka zarr. Last month he released his debut album: A Wandering Clarity, where he takes the listener on a beautifully introspective journey through some ambient and cinematic electronica.
Russian bassist and producer Anton aka LTF. Last month he released his debut album: Light The Fuse, a throwback to the old school hip-hop production style of the 90's. Expect jazzy bass, funky horns and dope beats.
Oakland-based producer an-ten-nae. Earlier this week he released his second studio album: Transmissions, where he returns with some more delicious chillstep filled with soulful vocals and worldly rhythms.
On today's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be listening to some of my favorite afro/latin funk released in the last year. I'll be featuring San Diego-based afrobeat/psychedelic soul group The Sure Fire Soul Ensemble and the eponymous debut album they released yesterday. We'll also hear from NYC-based The Brighton Beat, last month they released their second studio album of delicious afrobeat-funk: Off We Go. Then from 2014 we've got The Jungle Fire and Souljazz Orchestra. At the end of the show I'll send you out with some contemporary soul courtesy of Monophnics, Quantic, The Maytags and D'Angelo. Stream it all live February 3rd, 5pm-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio!
Blues guitar riffs, funky horns and soulful vocals, all mixed and mashed together with a healthy dose of bass and beats... sounds like the perfect recipe for another fine time on the After Hours. Tonight we'll be checking out some of my favorite electronica from last year, featuring: Opiuo, Ageless, Gramatik, Rameses B, and AudioTreats. Stream it live January 24th, 10pm-12am CST right here on KRUU radio.
On today's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be listening to my favorite folk, gypsy jazz, swing and americana from 2014. Stream it live January 13th, 5pm-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio!
last year saw a better than average crop of exciting music. (iowa has got me waxing poetica--farm style).
from the beautifully haunting melodies of coldplay's "ghost stories" (yes, this is in contention for album of the year in my opinion), to the creative, semi-electronic pop of norway's royksopp [pictured], and across genres to acoustic masterpieces by robert plant and alt-j....2014 heard it all.
one of my blissful pleasures from last year was eric clapton & friends' ode to jj cale. it was a smooth, rolling pleasure.
u2 surprised a lot of people by showing that their passion hasn't faded as much as the years have. and the black keys continue to show us the force of a three-piece rock band.
what a great year for new music. and some old musicians making new music too.
no reasonable person can say what the best album of 2014 was, but it'd be hard to argue that any of these weren't among the best.
the music ranged from the raucus (foo fighters) to the subtly sublime (beck, coldplay), and featured some certified geniuses (jackson browne, leonard cohen, u2, tom petty) to possible geniuses (broken bells, tv on the radio).
then there's the guy with a little of both: john lennon's son sean [pictured with co-musician/singer charlotte kemp muhl], whose psychedlic album "midnight sun" should not be overlooked by those reviewing the past year.
there was so much great music released this last year that i'll spend 2 weeks reviewing it. so this is just part 1 folks.
On today's edition of That Rightous Jive it's gonna be all about the beats, as we listen to my favorite instrumental hip-hop from 2014. Stream it live December 30th, 5pm-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.
2014 has been an incredible year for funk and soul. Later this month we'll be listening to my favorite instrumental jazz-funk and soul, but tonight it's all about the vocalists: the men and women pouring out their hearts and getting funky with it. Thirty different songs, thirty different artists--all from albums released this year. Stream it live December 20th, 10pm-12am CST right here on KRUU radio!
