Jazz-Funk, Soul & Trip-Hop of 2014

I've got some more great music from 2014 to share with you on tonight's edition of The After Hours. We'll start off with some jazz-funk courtesy of the Swedish sextet Beat Funktion and the Northern Cailifornian 10-piece funk train: Motherlode. Then we've got some simmering soul featuring Smooth Antics, a five-piece band from Vermont and their eponymous debut LP. Last but not least, we've got some instrumental hip-hop and trip-hop with Shag, Vanilla and Mr. Moods-Lou Mistrau-Erik Jackson. Stream it live October 4th, 10pm-12am CDT right here on KRUU radio.

(Mostly Instrumental) Hip-Hop Featuring Shawn Lee

On this Saturday night's edition of The After Hours we'll be listening to some great sample-based and breakbeat laced hip-hop (mostly instrumental). I'll be featuring producer and multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee's new album: Golden Age Against The Machine, which he released last week.

Shawn calls his new album "A living audio love letter to the Golden Age of hip-hop," for Shawn this spans the early 80s to mid-90s, before copyright law would drastically change the producers ability to freely sample and forever change the direction of the music. Lee says "sample-based production effected him deeply. It permeated the how and what of his musical performances. The sonic qualities of his productions, the arrangements and his drumming, in fact his whole approach." On Golden Age, he pays tribute to the sample-based music he loved, without ever actually using any samples. Instead (in his usual one-man-band style) he creates "everything from scratch, this includes every one note stab, lick and drum beat. Every little nugget a production in its own right." The results are quite enjoyable and I'll be playing for you some of my favorite tracks.

On top of that we've got Marc Mac's Visioneers, Question, The Sound Defects, ClassicBeatz, Red Martina, AlgorhythmsDafuniks, Gummy SoulProleteR and A Tribe Called Quest. Stream it live May 10th, 10pm-12am CDT right here on KRUU radio.
