2015: Brass, Soul & Beats

On tonight's edition of The After Hours I've got some more great new music from 2015. We'll start out with some brass featuring Brass Knuckle Brass Band--an eight-piece brass band hailing from Australia. Last month they released their debut LP: Split Lip, where they combine New Orleans-style brass with elements of funk and hip-hop. After that we've got some psychedelic soul with the San Francisco-based Monophonics. Earlier this week they released their fourth album together: Sound of Sinning. We'll finish out the night with some instrumental hip-hop & trip-hop featuring UK-based DJ & producer Frenic and the album he released last week Monomyth: Seperation. Stream it all live April 18th, 10pm-12am CDT right here on KRUU radio.

2013 Retrospective: Afrobeat Edition

On this Tuesday’s edition of That Righteous Jive we’ll be listening to my favorite afrobeat of 2013. I’ll be featuring The Fontanelles, a group who originally formed to be the onstage band for the London run of Fela! The Musical. After the show ended they decided to name themselves after the part of a baby’s head where the bones don’t quite all come together and start making some great original afrobeat. And that’s exactly what they’ve done with their debut album (released earlier this month): Horns Of Freedom, which sticks with the afrobeat backbone but also ventures into realms of reggae, ethio-jazz and ska. We’ll be listening to some choice tracks off of The Fontanelles new album, plus a whole lot more great afobeat courtesy of Bosq of Whiskey Barons, Cherimoya, Ikebe Shakedown and Jungle Fire—all from albums released this year. Stream it live November 26th 5-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.
