Neo Soul, Hip-Hop and Acid Jazz of 2013

On today’s edition of That Righteous Jive we’ll be listening to some great neo-soul, hip-hop and acid jazz. I’ll be featuring Joomanji, a project began by producer Jona Christian, drummer Amir Oosman and pianist Bob Finucane. They blend together smooth jazz, soul, hip-hop and R&B into a unique sound all their own. “Our productions consist of live recordings of the instrumentalists in our collective (Drums, Rhodes, Sax, Trumpet, Bass) mixed intermittently with vinyl sample chops. The resulting music is a fusion of crisp instrumental sound and that vintage vinyl vibe that so many of us hip-hop heads have grown to love.” We’ll be listening to some of my favorite tracks from their second album Manj, which they released earlier this year.

I’ll also be featuring The Brothers Nylon, a collaboration between the Rufolo brothers from New York and multi-instrumentalist and producer Shawn Lee in the UK [along with Ben Greenslade-Stanton (trombone) and Matt Boose (trumpet)]. They worked together to create cinematic acid jazz, filled with spacious funk-rock landscapes and eastern influences such as tabla, sitar and flute. The result is some of the most awesome, experimental, genre-bending music I’ve heard all year. We’ll be listening to their self-titled debut album, which they released last September.

On top of that we’ve got The Stuyvesants, SouleanceNeo Soul Acid Jazz Collective, Odjbox & Pierre, ClassicBeatz, Springdale Quarter and Wally Clark of Gummy Soul--all from albums released this year. Stream it live November 5th 5-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.
