2013 Retrospective: Electro-Swing Edition

Nearly a century after its heyday, swing is making a comeback and once again bringing feet down to the floor. DJs and producers from all over the world are re-inventing the genre by mixing and mashing it with elements of hip-hop, house and EDM. So brush off your dancing shoes and grab your favorite gal, because on today’s of That Righteous Jive we’ll be listening my favorite electro-swing albums of 2013.

I’ll be featuring the Parov Stelar Trio, an electro-swing group from Austria based around DJ Parov Stelar. Stelar performs live with vocalist Cleo Panther, saxophonist Markus Ecklmayr (aka Max the Sax), and trumpeter Jerry Di Monza, among others. We’ll also here hear from Boogie Belgique (a producer from Belgium) Odjbox & Pierre (a duo from Britian) and Goldfish (a duo from South Africa). Stream it live November 19th 5-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.

Best of Acid Jazz (Part 2)

Acid jazz is a genre that has been used to describe a wide variety of different sounds and styles over the years, but I feel it can be boiled down into two main catarogries: On one hand we have experimental jazz bands that dabble in soul, funk and R&B (sometimes incorporating synthesizers or other electronic elements into the groove). And on the other, we've got DJ's and electronic music producers that blend together jazz and electronica with hip-hop (and sometimes house) beats.

On this Saturday night's edition of the After Hours we'll be listening to some of my favorite examples of the later. We'll hear from The Herbaliser off of the album they released last year: There Were Seven. I've been digging this album more than any of their previous efforts, it's a bit less experimental, and more rooted in jazz, hip-hop and turntablism, which I love. I'll also be playing some choice tracks from my favorite acid jazz album Ki-Oku, the result of a collaboration between turntable sensei DJ Krush and trumpeter Toshinori Kondo (bottom right).

On top of that we'll be listening to Amon TobinSt. Germain, Mr. Scruff, Parov Stelar, SkalpelWax Tailor, and many more. Stream it live this Saturday night (10pm-12am CTZ) right here on KRUU radio.
