Swing of 2013

On today's edition of That Righteous Jive I'll be playing for you three of my favorite swing albums of 2013.

The first is the self-titled debut album by Bella Donna, a quartet from Springfield, MO. Together the play a fantastic blend of gypsy jazz, swing & folk. "Bella Donna is a jazz ensemble influenced by the Ozarks. The creak of tree limbs in the winter, the summer sounds of cicadas, and the rolling hills off highway 65 have helped influence their sound to create what they like to call "Ozark Jazz".

Secondly, we've got Jelly Doll Circus by Hippocampus Jass Gang, a seven-piece string ensemble from Montpellier, France. They play a mix of both traditional New Orleans-style and gyspy jazz, along with a nice heaping of folk and blues. This is their third album together.

Last, but certainly not least, we've got Jump, Jive & Wail by Louis Louis Louis, a quartet from Leeds, UK. "Playing classic swing, jump-jive, ska and red-hot rhythm & blues, Louis Louis Louis are guarenteed to get your feet tapping and your legs flapping! You can expect to hear thumping slap bass, honking saxophone, raucous four-part vocal harmonies and a driving piano boogie." They named their group after three of their main influences: Louis Armstrong, Louis Jordan and Louis Prima.

Stream it live May 13, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

new music from old folks from 2013

there was a lot of great new music released in 2013. lots of new artists, and plenty of old artists as well, all released new music.

flaming lipsbelieve it or not, the flaming lips [left] were formed 30 years ago, so they're practically a classic-rock band. their album "the terror" is a new direction of their psychedelic style.

creedence clearwater's john fogerty's "wrote a song for everyone" is a collaboration with other artists, playing some of fogerty's classic songs with him. it shows how fresh his music was and is.

there was some outstanding new music by david bowiepaul mccartney, pearl jam, eric clapton, and the seemingly immortal todd rundgren.

the best of the rest of last year's best

this week: the rest of the best of 2012.

if you haven't already heard, be sure to hear: authentic emo from john grant (in which his r-rated "gmf" is magically transformed into pg-13's "greatest living creature"), what can only be called uniqueness from the flaming lips, classic harmonies from the lone bellow, the acapella voices of pentatonix, the accoustic and screaming guitars of buckethead, and the very real and profound voice of lorde.

daft punkand the cd of the year (i know i said last week that it was snoop lion's reggae cd "reincarnation") is the technological funk mixes of daft punk's "random access memories." [pictured]

or maybe the cd of the year was arcade fire's "reflektor." or perhaps vampire weekend's "modern vampires of the city." or maybe...i'll continue this next week.

here's what you'll hear.

the best of 2013

janelle monae

what was the best song or album of 2013? no one can say, and no one should even try. the music that gives your body bliss is too subjective to rate on a scale and then try to make other people agree with you. all i can say is that last year was full of creative sounds, fun sounds, powerful sounds, beautiful sounds...

this week i'll play some of all that, and more.

the year 2013 was a year of great harmonies (vampire weekend, yeah yeah yeahs), new twists on old sounds (janelle monae, right), great lyrics and deep voices (the national), new forms for old voices (snoop dogg n/k/a snoop lion), great dancing (daft punk, robin thicke, avicii), and the uncategorizable (broken bells, arctic monkeys, kacey musgraves).

it'll be an hour packed with a little of everything.
