bob dylan

50 years ago, not many people appreciated the fact that bob dylan broke major musical and creative ground with his second album, "the freewheelin' bob dylan" (he never liked that title). based on the raw folk traditions of woody guthrie and ramblin jack elliot, dylan's lyrics were like no one else recording in 1963.

for contrast, i'll alternate songs from that album with other enduring songs that were released in the same year: the drifters' "on broadway," otis redding's "pain in my heart," sam cooke's "smoke rings," and peter, paul & mary's fantasy about puffing on the shores of hanalei, kauai, hawaii...
