LIVE GREAT TASTE-Tuesday at GBS!

Sheila Higgins/Kris JohnsonKris Johnson's greenhouse provided some fun fall surprises at this week's LIVE Great Taste show.  Kris grew and harvested mixed greens and strawberries (that's correct strawberries the first week of October).  Sheila Higgins, baker/cook extraordinaire, added the creative element, turning out sorrel soup, a tangy dressing for the greens, and some showstopping quinoa mini cupcakes.  

the glorious Vegetables of ItalyI’m about to let you in on what is not known to most lovers of asparagus:  you probably could be eating a late harvest of locally grown asparagus right now.  I am.  Most growers only plan for the normal spring asparagus season, but if you follow the advice in this article, another six to eight weeks of eating that divine vegetable can be yours to enjoy.  It may be too late for this year, but now you can plan ahead.

The New Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone came out this past spring, an update to her classic Vegetarian Cooking for Everyone published in 1997.  Last year’s Vegetable Literacy  went far beyond a recipe book as Madison drew on her insights over several decades of cooking, including stints in professional kitchens, and as a gardener, enlightening readers with the interconnected web of relationships within the same botanical family.

Farmer's Markets-Fresh Produce in Fresh Air

Fresh greens and berriesWednesdays and Saturdays are my two favorite parts of the week May-October because the outdoor Fairfield Farmer's Market is a fixture at Howard Park.  Going to the market is a multi-dimensional experience.  First, if you don't have a garden of your own, it gives you an intimate opportunity to harmonize with the changing products of the growing season.  Each table is laden with what nature is providing a particular grower at that specific moment.  Then, there is the chance to forge a link between what you eventually will serve to family and friends with the person responsible for growing it.  That human bond adds another dimension to the overall food experience.  Your food becomes traceable-how it is grown, where, by whom, all within the reach of a conversation.
