The Edible Schoolyard Project

Local vegetablesMy bet is most of our listeners have never heard of the Edible Schoolyard Project.  But, I believe many of you do recognize the name of one of the most well-known and iconic restaurants in California, Chez Panisse.  Well, they are intimately connected.  Alice Waters is the founder and driving force behind both.
Where Chez Panisse's staff has worked for 40 years to support and use food grown by local producers, "The mission of the Edible Schoolyard is to create and sustain an organic garden and landscape that is wholly integrated into the school’s curriculum, culture, and food program," according to the project's website.  It's initiative are designed to teach young children not only the value of eating fresh, nutritious food, but to know where the food comes from and how it grows while allowing them to participate in the process.
