Poor little girl with a big bad crush
We're hanging on the line
between too much & not enough
~ One Glass Too Many, Emma Hill
Portland-based singer-songwriter Emma Hill grew up in Alaska and is currently touring the country. Seeing Emma's success across her home state and hearing her smoky, mature voice and lyrics, it may come as a shock to find out she is only 22 years old. Her Americana flavored folk leans more in the direction of vintage than twang and somehow manages to both sooth and tug on the heartstrings at the same time.
Join me Tuesday, September 21st at 9am Central Time for an interview with Emma, followed by your weekly dose of music by female singer songwriters!
Juliana Finch was raised in the South, in an Italian-American family, listening to Irish music. Her songwriting style reflects that bizarre cocktail. She has most recently been compared to Shawn Colvin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, and Natalie Merchant, which flatters her and never fails to make her want to keep it up. Juliana is a professional eavesdropper, a perpetual student, and an amateur chef. Some of her favorite things include scarves, breakfast, handmade stuff, pugs and the color red.
A foundling, a foundling, looking for home
Wanders through darkness and travels alone
~ The Foundling, Mary Gauthier
Known for her tell-it-like-it-is style, award-winning songwriter Mary Gauthier's previous albums told mostly other people's stories. Often highlighting those living on the margins of society, her songs deal with tough subjects such as HIV, alcoholism and homeless travelers in a wise and compassionate way. They give a window of insight to those on the outside, and a sense of support and validation to those feeling alone and misunderstood.
How Mary found that compassion is quite obvious with a listen to her brand new concept album called The Foundling. The autobiographical song cycle starts with her story of being abandoned as a child and leads up to finding her birth mother as an adult, only to be denied the chance to connect. Somehow, through all that, she still manages to believe in and sing about love.
Join me Tuesday, May 25th from 9-10am Central for Lyrical Venus, where the focus is on music by female singer-songwriters. Mary's segment will air at 9:30am.
