There was a story in the news about a Wal-Mart employee who was literally trampled to death by 2000 ravenous consumers stampeding through the door as the store opened at 5 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving.
"Other workers were knocked to the ground as they tried to rescue him, and customers simply stepped over him and kept shopping even as the store announced it was closing because of the death, police and witnesses said."
Are we all completely nuts?
I cannot say my daddy farmed these fields
and I cannot say my mama roamed these hills
I've been high in the mountains, in the desert and by the sea
and now this rolling land is calling me.
~ Song For Iowa, Lauryn Shapter
I've been eagerly awaiting the new CD by husband and wife Americana duo Truckstop Souvenir for a while now, and the release party is this weekend! Under A Big Blue Sky was recorded in Lauryn and Dennis' home studio here in Fairfield, which is no easy trick with all the frequent trains passing by.
And you just may hear a train whistle during their interview on Lyrical Venus this Tuesday, what with the station being right by the tracks! Luckily it's a nostalgic sound that fits with their themes - dusty roads, wide rivers, tiny mining towns, old time rodeos and lonely motels.
If you need an escape to the good ole days, tune in at 9am for some Lyrical Venus-y tunes, and the Truckstop Souvenir interview at 9:30. read more »
Over thirty years ago, in a collision at home plate, Ralph Marino received a neck injury that left him paralyzed from his shoulders to his toes. Since that fateful day, Ralph has graduated from college and has been a successful high school basketball coach and school social worker. He is also a motivational speaker, inspiring audiences wherever he speaks. http://www.ralphmarino.com/
Chris Hull teaches as an adjunct assistant professor at Georgetown University. He also runs Issue Management, Inc., a Washington, D.C. public affairs firm. His first book, Grassroots Rules: How the Iowa Caucus Helps Elect American Presidents, was published in November, 2007 by Stanford University Press.
On this week's show Justin Hayward and the
Moody Blues take center stage early with a tribute set to their classic 1968 LP "In Search of the Lost Chord" (album cover). Their sound was distinctive and their lyrics resonate with the seeker in us all. You'll hear the tracks, "Legend of a Mind" and "OM". Drift back with nostalgia to the golden era. Sprinkled throughout the evening, other guest from the same period will visit including Pentangle and Simon & Garfunkel.

rock ON
in.dub.itably, there are no shortages of sound for this Crucial Roots hour. clearly, being allotted one hour for a reggae show is pretty hard to pull off. every week i end up cutting my playlist in half and squeezing in as many tracks as humanly possible.
especially hard this week because my sweet sister came to town- armed with new mp3 files galore acquired from various friends and connections. big ups as well for sistah Kate's new KRUU holla mid show. this week a special mention also needs to be given to Spanky and Hawk for the delicious new riddumz that i've acquired from them. there will be more to come from that vault.....
for now, we'll start off slow and steady with some Midnite, then dub it with the Abyssinians and Augustus Pablo. the smooth sounds continue with Ziggy, Junior Byles and a little Barry Brown. from there, the dial goes up a few notches. expect favorites a la Sizzla, Capleton and Anthony B. new to my collection, and the three hottest tracks currently available to human kind, close out the hour. big ups to Brooklyn's own Dr. Israel and sistah Santogold as well as the amazing UK trip-hop geniuses Nightmares on Wax. dial it!
Hey there hip-hop heads...It's saturday, and that means Soul Product is getting closer to another all-new prerecorded, chalk full of beats program. you won't want to miss this week.
