Join cohosts Stuart Tanner and James Moore on Tanner & Moore this Thursday November 20 at 7pm CST for a further indepth discussion on the Congo with David Bamlango. Bamlango, who grew up in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is working as a lawyer for an international business firm in Chicago.
Two weeks ago, Tanner & Moore were joined by Congolese native Kabuika Kamunga for a historical discussion and background on the tragic country that has seen so much suffering.
Since 1998, an estimated 6 million Congolese have lost their lives due to war, hunger and illness. 6 million--never mind the brutal legacy of King Leopold's Imperial reign of terror, Belgian colonialization, and the Western-backed rule of Mobutu.
Is the lack of international outrage due to a lack of coverage on the admittedly complex situation? What can you do about it? Tune in and decide for yourself. 2 recent articles on the Congo:
Hey folks. Another great weekend in Fairfield, Iowa means more great artists passing through. This Saturday, November 22, Rachel Ries and Anais Mitchell will grace the stage at Cafe Paradiso. I have the honor of having the lovely and talented Ms. Ries on the show for a phone-in interview on Crooked Sisters Radio Hour. Rachel and Anais have joined forces to release their "Country EP" out on Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe label. It's a charming collection of five songs with their voices blending beautifully. We'll talk about the project, their upcoming show, the influences of the South Dakota prairies where Rachel was raised and the contrast of that life with life in Chicago. read more »

In 1939, just before graduating from high school in the small town of Ridgeway in northeast Iowa, Everett Kuntz spent his entire savings of $12.50 on a 35mm Argus AF camera. He made a camera case from a worn-out boot, scraps from a tin can, and a clasp from his mother's purse. For the next several years, he clicked the shutter of his trusty Argus all around the quiet town.
People got so used to it that they became relaxed around the camera, and even began to count on him saying, “Where is Everett? We need a picture.” Everett never had the money to print his photographs. More than two thousand negatives stayed in a box while he married, raised a family, and worked as an electrical engineer in the Twin Cities. read more »

Well I'm not sure what stars aligned but somehow I'm lucky enough to have three great artists calling in this week!
Anaïs Mitchell and Rachel Ries are returning to Fairfield this weekend as part of their tour in support of their duo project - Country EP. The sweet little gem of a record was put out on vinyl by Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records. The gals harmonize on a handpicked few of
each other's songs plus one by their friend Louis Ledford to make up a low-fi, honey jangly, down-home, vintage sounding collection.
After that we'll hear from New York's award-winning, quirky folk-pop diva Rachael Sage. Her 8th solo album Chandelier was released this summer and it's as sparking as they say, with glam guitars, twinkling piano and a bright horn section. My only disappointment is that I didn't discover her music earlier!
Tune in Tuesday from 9-10 am to hear from all these amazing ladies! read more »

Mr. Goolsbee is currently being considered by President Elect Obama for the position of Secretary of Commerce.
Enough already with the economy, the war and all that other depressing jazz. Let's focus on the important stuff, like the new James Bond movie. This week's I.W.H. will devote its opening hour or so to Music for Spies, including the weirdest version of "Secret Agent Man" ever recorded, an a capella rendition of the theme from "Mission Impossible" and much more. Formal dress and scuba gear required.
