Poetry reading by Heather-Derr Smith

Sarajevo, December 7th 2009

American
poet Mrs. Heather-Derr Smith visited International University of
Sarajevo on Monday, December 7th 2009 and held a poetry reading for all
interested students in the IUS Conference hall starting at 17 o'clock.
The event began with an introduction speech by Prof. Ann Henry from the
IUS Faculty of arts and social sciences, and then continued with the
readings by Mrs. Smith.

At
the very beginning, Mrs. Smith presented and read poems from her first
book titled „Each End of the World“, book written during the war in
Bosnia and Herzegovina, when she was working in the refugee camp. Due
to this, poems from this book represent and use folk motives together
with the refugee stories. As Mrs. Smith said „poems from this book are
labors of love“ and after each of the poem she explained the story
behind it.

As
the evening continued, Mrs. Smith read from her other works as well,
including the book „The Bride Minaret“, collection of poems that bear
witness to the close connection between intelligence and love. Besides
the poetry reading, Mrs. Smith, together with prof. Henry, held poetry
workshop earlier on the same day that was attended by a number of
students, both from IUS and other universities in Sarajevo.
