October 2008 marked the passing of the great Hammond organ artist, Merl Saunders, perhaps best known for his collaboration with Jerry Garcia (photo left) of the Grateful Dead. On this night, Saunders and Garcia work together
in extended live cuts from their album, "Well-Matched: Best of...". Oh yes, you'll hear flavors of the Dead as well as Saunders collaborations with artists like Tom Fogerty and Mike Bloomfield. Following these tracks, you will hear Amar Sundy (photo right), "bluesman of the desert," who is credited for bringing his unique blend of American and Sahara blues to France... definitely some influences from Albert King with whom he has toured. Iowa's Bo Ramsey sits in for this set, too!
As the evening unfolds and the ladies step up, your ears will thrill in the music of Cat Power, Amy Speace, Catie Curtis and Bonnie Raitt (sliding into the blues set early in the program). Listen closely when Crowded House takes the stage with an extended 6-minute alternative version of "Don't Dream Its Over," one of DJ Andy's favorites. Stay tuned throughout the evening for delightful confections from Calexico, Iron & Wine, Afro Celt Sound System and a host of chill out artists in the last 40 minutes.
Cool down with Fringe Toast on a Wednesday evening!
