FRINGE TOAST - DJ Andy's CHILL OUT Session - Wed., 6/03/09 at 8pm CT

shantelThis week's show is 100% worldwide chill out music from the past decade. "Chill out" emerged in the early and mid-1990s as a catch-all term for various styles of relatively mellow, slow-tempo music made by anjani thomascontemporary producers in the electronic music scene." In dance clubs of the 1990s, DJ's began setting up rooms near the dance floor for customers to relax with slower tempo music. Originally intended as background music, "chill out" gradually emerged as a new genre blues influenced electronica. Although not exclusively labeled chill out artists (photos), both Anjani Thomas, American collaborator with Leonard Cohen, and Shantel (Germany) offer interesting slices of blues and elecronica as part of this week's playlist.

Latin flavors come from Argentina's Federico Aubele, Sweden's Jose Gonzalez, Brazilian Amon Tobin, and B-tribe. French electronica flows from Aratone and Air. The UK stands tall with the ethereal sounds of William Orbit, Nightmares on Wax, and Ireland's Autamata (aka, Ken McHugh). Oh, this list goes on... but have you ever really heard of them: Morten Variano, Orbient, Anugama, BMS, Bela Karoli, and Andy Votel. Keep a pen and paper handy. Most certainly, you'll hear something to complement your music collection. CHILL!
