Update 3/23: progress on backup vault, its happening.

(continue reading for long version... with numbers and stuff)

Long version: Lots goes on @ KRUU to ensure that radio continues to get whipped up pushed out 24/7/365. One of our most important pieces of technology is the "Vault". The Vault is our network fileserver that all computer workstations in the station store and retrieve audio from, it also stores ALL the archives from broadcast shows. Our current Vault set-up is based on a 3u rack server platform with multiple SATA drives, running FreeBSD OS, with redudent disks, power supplies and fans. A single Vault configured this way has a very low probability of failure, however because of the importance of the Vault to KRUU's operations, we run 2 exact same servers in Primary/Backup configuration.

Several months ago, we started to have motherboard and hardrive problems with one of the Vault servers, and we also ran out of space (MORE HARD DRIVES PLEASE!). We have been running the station with a single Vault server since that time.

In the last week, two of the 8 drives in the running Vault server began experiancing errors. Because of the RAID reduncency configuration, no impact to station operation has been experianced yet, however an additional hard drive failure would result in data loss, and could be "catastrophic".  So, we need to replace the failed hard drives asap, and replace the 2nd Vault hardware to be back to normal operations. The age of the running Vault components are end-of-life, so the board, cpu, and ram should also be replaced.
