KRUU's Anna Brett speaks with Monserrat Iñiguez, of the The Village Urban Collective and The Soapbox Speakeasy. The Soapbox Speakeasy is a monthly spoken word event held the Saturday following ArtWalk at the Urban Village Collective.

The Soapbox Speakeasy is headlined by a different language artist each month- the headliner selects the theme, which sets the writing challenge, and the ensuing lineup is filled by poets who craft work to speak on the topic.

Headliners will have their printed work available for purchase at the event. The goal of the event is to inspire people to write- including audience members. It promotes a community of writers who gather to teach, write, share, rehearse, play and support each other, as well as develop material for performance and publishing. The Soapbox Speakeasy is presented by The Urban Village Collective, a space for craftspeople, artisans, and independent business owners to create, develop, and sell their products in a friendly cooperative setting. The UVC also functions as start-up support for new small businesses.
