This week on The Skinny, there's a 'tint of snow' in the air (and the KRUU studios) as Africa lends the reins to Kathy Snow and Andrew Tint.

Listen to their fun interview with one of Kathy's college roommates, teammates, and besties, Janelle Jaspers Jones. A 3-time state high school high jump champ, 1st team all-state basketball player, and one of Iowa's all-time Top 10-performing heptathletes--Janelle's now a busy mom and personal trainer in Minneapolis with her own wellness-based business called Functional Fitness. Janelle trains clients from all walks and ages. Whether they're in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, and even 70s and 80s (who Africa fondly refers to as 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s, 6s, 7s, and 8s)...Janelle encourages everyone to start making themselves a priority and do what they can to lead a healthier life. Listen and learn while Janelle introduces us to Tabata-style training. Founded in Japan by Izumi Tabata, the Tabata concept is an easily modified type of high intensity interval training that you can customize to your fitness level. Unlike a more complicated or multi-exercise circuit, one Tabata session could be simply two exercises...doing as many squats (or just getting up and sitting down on a chair as many times) as you can in 20 seconds, followed by 10 seconds of rest, and then 20 seconds of push-ups (or do them against the wall), followed by 10 seconds of rest...and repeat 4 times.

Nothing fancy. You can do it at home, in the office, etc. Just remember to keep it simple, safe, use your own body weight, and try to work your full body with exercises like burpees in the mix. It's fun because you can change it up and you're not just jogging, biking, etc. Find something you like and do it--shoot baskets, play tennis, walk your dog, etc. Work out with a friend or let someone know you're making fitness a priority in order to keep yourself accountable. Janelle also reminds us at the advent of this holiday season to enjoy, but please remember one word...moderation. You can still have your cake and eat it too--just not the whole cake, or pie, or...well, you get it. Eat a rainbow of veggies and fruit--the brighter the veggie, the darker the berry...the better. For all you carnivores, eat lean meat and remember that spices are our friends. Use your own hands to determine serving sizes. No meat portion bigger than the palm of your hand, but there's nothing wrong with a fist-full of baby spinach:-) Where did the time go? What you didn't get a chance to hear off mic was Janelle telling us her hands-on personal experience with weight loss truly being a world issue--as she also flies for a major airline and how each aircraft now must carry at least 8 seat belt extenders per flight.
