Parenting a disabled child during his first five years of life is candidly described in Joy M. Newcom's self-published memoir, Involuntary Joy: a Story of Unexpected Rebirth. A motivational speaker, Joy co-owns JoyMark! Communications with her college professor husband. Their public relations consulting firm specializes in providing comprehensive services to nonprofits. Joy served as creative consultant and event coordinator for an Iowa conference on diversity issues for the Lt. Governor's Committee on Diversity (with Dr. Maya Angelou as featured speaker). Joy has also overseen many print and video productions. For 17 years she was an adjunct instructor of public relations for Waldorf College. Involuntary Joy details her thoughts and feelings during her son Stross' early years. She and husband Mark live in Forest City, Iowa with Stross and their younger son Skye. Tune in to The Studio with Cheryl this week to learn about self-publishing and about what parents of disabled children really wish you would do.
