The holidays are in sight so over the next few shows we're going to ratchet things up to help you prepare.  This week we even have two "live" shows for your listening or, if you are a local, viewing pleasure.

Chili Cook-OffOur first guest is author and editor, Gina Hyams.  Gina came up with a very fun concept-hosting cooking contests at home.  She's packaged the idea, so far, into three "in a box" products-Pie Contest in a Box, Chili Cook-Off in a Box, and her newest release, Christmas Cookie Contest in a Box.  Each kit includes everything you need as the fun party host-judge badges, prize ribbons, scorecards, and more.  We'll cook up some chili and talk with Gina about how to throw a different and exciting holiday party, plus we'll give away one of each of the "in a box" items.  If you bring some chili, a pie or Christmas cookies to share with the audience, you'll get first chance at the prizes.

Jack's Root BeerI love root beer.  As a little kid I wanted to go to A&W and have my root beer in a frosty mug with a big head.  Hires and Dad's were my other two favorites.  In my so-called adult phase, I had my own version of Gina's "in a box" events, hosting a root beer tasting contest.  We tried eight different versions in a blind taste test that Virgil's won.  But, now I have tasted a root beer that is in a different strata, and it's brewed locally in Fairfield.  Jack's Real Root Beer is the creation of local kombucha brewer, Jack Dowd, who is also the genius behind the flavors bottled by the Shaktea Kombucha company.  Jack's root beer is all organic, and is hand-crafted in small batches with herbs, roots, and spices.  I've tried it in the bottle, and on draft at Cafe Paradiso.  Wow!  It has a wonderful complex flavor and just the right touch of carbonation. 

Yes, we'll not only find out what drove Jack to capture the essence of great root beer in his newest liquid refreshment, but those of you in the audience at Hy-Vee will have the chance to taste it straight-up and in a root beer float.

Gisella IsidoriOne more terrific guest will join us Wednesday-my dear friend Gisella Isidori.  Gisella cooked to a full-house at Hy-Vee in June.  She had the At Home Store overflowing with people during her class this past Sunday.  Wednesday she'll share with us how and why she started making pasta in New York.  Thursday we'll have a bonus show at Hy-Vee that is all Gisella.  She has several dishes planned, and will need some help from anyone who would like hands-on experience. I'll post another blog with the details, but Thursday night from 7-8 pm at Hy-Vee and streaming live on KRUU, Gisella will enchant us with real regional dishes from Italy.
