THE INTERCRANIAL WHIZBANG HOUR: An apparently random assortment
Have you ever gotten really enthusiastic about a particular album or artist, then forgotten about them for a long time and then rediscovered them?
This week's I.W.H. will feature albums and/or artists which, for example, I only had on cassette or beat-up vinyl but recently rediscovered and replaced with digital copies. These will include Newgrass musician extraordinaire David Grisman, the later works of Tim Buckley, the all-percussion ensemble Diga Rhythm Band and let's not forget Lou Carter, the Singing Cabdriver.
But I especially want to spend time with The Subdudes, whose most recent release, Street Symphony, was hailed as "the album of the century" by Sound & Vision (Originally Stereo Review, for you old-timers). If you're not familiar with them, the best analogy I can make is a cross between Little Feat and The Band--if The Band had grown up funky in New Orleans instead of Canada. Great musicianship and song-writing and a whole lotta soul.
And if there's time, I want to play an amazing version of Rhapsody in Blue, recorded recently with a full orchestra and George Gershwin himself sitting in on piano, courtesy of a player piano-roll he created back in the 1920's
