Tonight! A special show in honor of the 20th birthday of Sub Pop Records ...give or take your definition of 20th anniversary as they have actually been in existence in some form or another for a little longer than that. I'll be highlighting some of my fave Sub Pop songs from the past 8 years or so... I'm sorry I just can't go grunge on you. I know I know... I COULD play some of the music that put Sup Pop on te map, like Nirvana, Mudhoney, Soundgarden and Green River ...but alas that would mean also reminiscing about Seattle in the 90's and that could take a long time and would mean I'd have to whip out old pictures of me with a chelsea haircut and ripped jeans. I can't bring myself to do that to you ...or me. A girls got a reputation to maintain ;-)
Tonight I'm going to keep it simple and share just some of the many many beautiful songs (at least what will fit in an hour) that Sub Pop has been putting out since leaving grunge in the crusty past. Some personal faves include one of the latest SP signees, Fleet Foxes and a band that Jonathan once described to me as the weirdest band in the world ...the Shins. Of course I will also be playing a Postal Service song and don't even get me started about how convinced I am that some of the lyrics in their song "The Disctrict Sleeps Alone Tonight" were inspired by a frantic trip I once had to make to the Sub Pop headquarters bathroom... the men's bathroom no less. Yeah, don't even get me started.
I am just about to run out the door to catch the SP anniversary festival here in the Seattle area where some of my all time favorite bands will be playing: Helio Sequence, Iron and Wine, Flight of the Conchords AND the Vaselines (woo!).
So tune in tonight to catch an allergy laden, running around version of me sharing some great tunes with you. And a big congratulations to a great little local label that has proven its longevity and evolved into a shining example of independant spirit!!!! The people at Sub Pop Records are a HUGE and constant inspiration for me and have totally blasted any doubts out of my mind that a few small people can make a big difference in the world! A great example for what community stations like our little KRUU FM can do and what every individual in every community can do to better the world around them whether it be through music, consciousness, art, business, technoloy ...or even better yet a stellar combination of them all.
