The Great American Songbook, Week 1: Ella

One of only a hanElladful of recording artists so beloved she usually needs no last name, Ella made her huge musical mark by bringing together disparate elements of American culture, as Frank Rich put it so succinctly: "Here was a black woman popularizing urban songs often written by immigrant Jews to a national audience of predominantly white Christians."

Not easy to find someone more responsible for the popularity of the music we now refer to as the Great American Songbook.  They can't take that away from her.  Because with this immortal artist, anything goes, even if it is only a paper moon.  Which is why our first show of this series features the work of the great Ella Fitzgerald.

Only at the Wildflowers Cafe.

Only on KRUU-FM.
