More New Jazz, Funk & Trip-Hop

On today's edition of That Righteous Jive I've got some more new jazz, funk & trip-hop. We'll be starting off with Mike Dillon's band (left), a quartet that combines New Orleans' jazz-funk sensibility with a defintive punk-rock ethos. I was lucky enough to catch their act at Paradiso last week (they killed it) and while I was there I picked up a copy of their new LP Band Of Outsiders, which comes out next month. I'll be playing some of my favorite tracks from it.

After that we'll hear from two great funk albums, both released last week: Funkstamatic by Euro Cinema (a quartet from Amsterdam) and Therapy by The New Mastersounds (a quartet from Leeds).

Last but not least, we'll finish out the set with some downtempo trip-hop courtesy of Florida-based producer Erik Jackson. I'll be playing a few tracks from the LP he released last month: Time Enough At LastStream it live March 18th, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Pop Deconstructed On The After Hours

On this Saturday night's edition of The After Hours we'll be listening to some popular songs like you've never heard them before. I'll be featuring NYC-based pianist Scott Bradlee's series Mashups By Candle Light.

"For the past several years, I've used the last hour of my weekly performances at Robert Restaurant to offer some commentary on popular culture through the use of musical juxtaposition- or "mashups"- of various recognizable themes. My aim is to create a setting where genre and taste distinctions no longer exist, and all songs - both highbrow and populist - are at long last freed from their cultural coded baggage. It is a time for reflection. It is a time for appreciation. It is a time to play ridiculous mashups and still make tips doing so." -Scott Bradlee

We'll also hear from Omaha Diner (bottom-right), an experimental jazz quartet composed of Charlie Hunter (guitar), Steven Bernstein (trumpet), Bobby Previte (drums) and Skerik (saxaphone). Together they deconstruct and reimagine various songs which at some point have reached #1 on the Top 40 pop chart.

On top of that we've got a whole lot more great experimental jazz covers of popular songs courtesy of Rebirth Brass BandKarl Denson's Tiny Universe, Hot 8 Brass Band, Black Chamber, Jack Brass Band, The New Mastersounds and Broken Brass Ensemble. Stream it live March 15th, 10pm-12am CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Jazz, Funk and R&B of 2014

On this Tuesday's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be listening to some of my favorite jazz, funk and R&B albums to have been released so far this year. I'll be featuring The New Mastersounds and Omaha Diner.

The New Mastersounds are a quartet from the UK who play old-school Meters' style funk. Today (03/10) they released their ninth studio album together: Therapy.

Omaha Diner is a super-group composed of Charlie Hunter (guitar), Steven Bernstein (trumpet), Bobby Previte (drums) and Skerik (saxaphone). Together they reimagine (in their own avant-garde jazz style) songs which at some point have reached #1 on the Top 40 pop chart. Ealier this year they released thier debut self-titled album.

We'll be checking out some of my favorite tracks from both The New Mastersounds' and Omaha Diner's new albums. On top of that we've got a whole lot more great jazz, funk and R&B courtesy of Ikebe ShakedownKarl Denson's Tiny Universe, Snarky Puppy and Lack of Afro--all from albums released this year. Stream it live March 11th, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Trip-Hop and R&B of 2014

On this Tuesday's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be listening to some of my favorite trip-hop and R&B of 2014. I'll be featuring Akshin Alizadeh and Lack Of Afro.

Cold Busted is a trip-hop record label based out of LA. They have a long-standing "funky and soulful downtempo beat series" called Street Bangerz. For each volume they tap a different artist from their label to bust out some of his or her best beats. For Volume 8, released last month, they picked Akshin Alizadeh, a producer from Azerbaijan.

"Taking his cue from his native country, this album sits at a crossroad between East and West incorporating the producer’s strong funk and nu jazz influences as well as his ability to combine funky grooves with punchy hip-hop beats." -Cold Busted

Lack of Afro aka Adam Gibbons is a producer and multi-instrumentalist from the UK. Today (03/03) he released his fourth studio album: Music For Adverts. Though Gibbons may not have the 'fro, he's certainly got the soul. His new LP draws on the styles of yesteryear to create an amazing blend of funk and R&B (plus a little hip-hop).

On top of that we've got Broke For Free, Moderator, Zamali, Kognitif and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings--all from albums released this year. Stream it live March 4th, 5-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.

Experimental Jazz Featuring Snarky Puppy

On this Saturday night's edition of The After Hours we'll be listening to some experimental jazz featuring Snarky Puppy--an instrumental jazz fusion band based in Brooklyn (though originally formed in Denton, Texas), led by bassist and composer Michael League. Earlier this week they released a brand new LP: We Like It Here.

"Recorded and filmed live with a studio audience over 4 nights in the Netherlands, We Like It Here captures the band at its most explorative point in its career, in both composition and improvisation."

I've been loving their new album so much I'm going to be playing the whole thing for you in its enitirety. We'll also hear some more great jazz fusion courtesy of Lund QuartetPierre Anckaert Trio, Plini, Black Chamber, Suffer Like G Did and Quick Fix--all from albums released in the last three years. Stream it live March 1st, 10pm-12am CST right here on KRUU radio.

Beck's new album Morning Phase dropped today. This is his first proper LP since 2008's Modern Guilt and I've been lovin' it ever since I first got my hands on it.

On today's edition of That Righteouse Jive we'll be listening to some of my favorite tracks from Beck's new album. On top of that we've got some more great neo-soul & blues with Con Brio and Stac.

Stream it live today (Feb. 25) 5-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.

Contemporary Jazz, Soul & Funk

On this Saturday night's edition of The After Hours we'll be listening to some great contemporary jazz, soul and funk featuring Karl Denson's Tiny Universe and Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings.

Karl Denson (left) is a San Diego-based saxaphonist who first found his way to the spotlight playing with the acid jazz-boogaloo group The Greyboy Allstars. Earlier this week he released a new album with his own band, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe, entitled New Ammo. As usual Denson and the boys bust out a beautiful blend of jazz, funk and soul, but on their new recording they also delve further into blues and rock than I've ever heard them do before (and the results are quite amazing!).

The legendary queen of retro-soul, Sharon Jones, released a new album last month with The Dap-Kings (the house band for Daptone Records), entitled Give The People What They Want. I don't know if I count as a true representative of "the people", but I do know this album is exactly what I wanted; both the compositions and production are tight as hell.

On top of that we've got Monophonics, New MastersoundsThe Greyboy AllstarsThe Gene Dudley Group, Rock Candy Funk Party and a whole lot more! Stream it live February 8th 10pm-12am right here on KRUU radio.

Electro-swing, trip-hop, breakbeats and downtempo electronica... Sounds like another great Saturday night of genre-blending, mind-bending music here on The After Hours.

I'll be featuring ProleteR, an electro-swing producer from France, and Broke For Free, a downtempo trip-hop producer from Oakland. On top of that we've got Moderator, Frenic, Poldoore, Catching Flies, Gummy Soul and a whole lot more.

Stream it live February 1st 10pm-12am CST right here on your one and only solar-powered KRUU radio.
