Brass & Hip-Hop of 2014

On today’s edition of That Righteous Jive I’ve got some great experimental brass and underground hip-hop from 2014.

I’ll be featuring Moon Hooch, an experimental brass trio (composed of a drummer and two saxophonists) from Brooklyn, and their second album together: This Is Cave Music. Moon Hooch’s objective is to create house music through an organic process, thus dubbing their sound “cave music”. On their new album they use a variety of effect pedals to further blend the line between instrument and electronic.

We’ll also hear from Renegade Brass Band, Guts, Chill Bump, Nitsua and Vanilla. Stream it live September 23rd 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Jazz of 2014 featuring Medeski Scofield Martin & Wood

2014 has been a great year for jazz, and on this Tuesday’s edition of That Righteous Jive we’ll be listening to some of my favorite trios and quartets. I'll be featuring Medeski Martin & Wood, joined by long time collaborator guitarist John Scofield, and their new album Juice.

"The blueprint for Juice was found in a compilation of African-derived music put together by drummer Billy Martin and shared among the ensemble. “We all love music from Brazil, the Caribbean, and Latin America, and it has always been intertwined with jazz,” explains Medeski. “We got together and started exploring that connection in our own way.”"
