Soul-infused Trip-hop + My Favorite Electronica of 2013

George Evelyn AKA Nightmares on Wax (NoW), a DJ/electronic music producer from England, is releasing a new studio album next month, titled Feelin Good. On this Saturday night’s edition of The After Hours we’ll be preparing for NoW’s new release by listening to some of my favorite songs from across his discography.  We’ll also hear some more great soul-infused trip-hop courtesy of The Stuyvesants and Lack of Afro. In the second hour of the show I’ll be playing some of my favorite trip-hop, downtempo, and electronica albums to have been released so far this year. We’ll hear from Bonobo, Daft Punk, Parov Stelar Trio, TOKiMONSTA, DJ Frane and more. Stream it live August 17th 10pm-12am CDT right here on KRUU radio.

On this Tuesday's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be listening to some of my favorite funk albums to have come out so far this year. I'll be featuring Rock Candy Funk Party's debut album We Want Groove and Analog Attenion's debut album City Limits, as well as Redtenbacher's Funkestra's new album The Cooker. On top of that we've got Orgone, The Greyboy Allstars, and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Stream it live August 13, 6-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Modest Mouse On The After Hours

Modest Mouse is finally working on a new studio album (their first since 2007's We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank), planned to come out next year.

On tonight's edition of The After Hours we'll be listening to some of my favorite songs by Modest Mouse from all across their discography. We'll also hear from Speechwriters LLC, Man Man, Arctic Monkeys, The White Stripes, Grizzly Bear and more! Stream it live August 10th, 10pm-12am right here on KRUU.

Man Man is an experimental band from Philadelphia centered around pianist, lead singer and lyricist Ryan Kattner AKA Honus Honus. Man Man combines doo-wop, jazz and experimental rock with a gypsy circus/caravan vibe and a decidedly punk ethos to create an unrivaled sound all their own. Next month they’ll be back with a new studio album: On Oni Pond. Like their 2011 album, Life Fantastic, their new album will be produced by Mike Mogis (of Bright Eyes and Monsters of Folk fame). Drummer Christopher Powell AKA Pow Pow has taken on a new-found prominence in the band’s songwriting process and I’m interested to see how this will affect their over-all sound. When asked about his new album, Honus Honus said: "This is a strange and beautiful record, but it’s also head on and fearless. It's not a record that's going to flirt with you, this is record that's asking you out. And if you get into bed with us there's going to be a relationship." Last month Man Man teased us with the goodness to come by releasing a single, titled Head On, off of their new album.

On this Tuesday's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be listening to Head On, along with some of my favorite songs from the rest of Man Man's excellent discography. Stream it live August 6th, 5-6pm right here on KRUU radio.

I’ll be featuring legendary bassist Victor Wooten on tonight’s edition of The After Hours. We’ll be listening mostly to Sword and Stone, the first disc to Wooten’s two-disc album he released last year. We’ll also hear some tracks from the rest of Wooten’s solo work, along with some live performances from his work with his brother Future Man, legendary banjo player Bela Fleck and Howard Levy (playing together as Bela Fleck and the Flecktones). On top of that we’ve got some of my other favorite bluegrass and acid jazz jam bands: The String Cheese Incident, James Taylor QuartetPenguin Café Orchestra and Railroad Earth. In the last half hour of the show we’ll be taking a trip through some of my favorite psychedelic soul, featuring The Politicians, Monophonics, and The RH Factor. Stream it live August 3rd, 10pm-12am right here on KRUU.

On this Tuesday's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be listening to some of my favorite jazz and swing albums to have been released so far this year. We'll start off with Kermit Ruffins (left), a jazz trumpeter (and co-founder of Rebirth Brass Band) from New Orleans. We'll be listening to his album released last May, We Partyin' Traditional Style. Then we'll listen to legendary jazz guitarist George Benson (paying respect to one of my favorite singers from the golden era of swing) off his album released last month: Inspiration: A Tribute To Nat King Cole. After that we'll hear from the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, off the album they released earlier this month, That's It!. This is the first album in the band's fifty year history to ever consist entirely (with only one exception) of original compositions. Finally we'll hear from jazz/funk keyboardist Robert Walter (specializing on the Hammond B3), playing with his band the 20th Congress, off the album they released last month Get Thy Bearings. Stream it live July 30, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU.

Funk and Electro-Swing On The After Hours

I got another great show planned for tonight's edition of The After Hours. I'll be featuring Adam Gibbons AKA Lack of Afro, a multi-instrumentalist and DJ from the UK who mixes together funk, soul and hip-hop. We'll be listening to his debut album, Press On, along with his second album, My Groove Your Move.

We'll also hear from 6ix Toys, a seven-piece electro-funk group from Liverpool, off their self-titled debut album. And we'll hear from Caravan Palace, a seven-piece electro-swing group from Paris, off the album they released last year, Panic. On top of that we've got GalacticThe Haggis Horns, Analog Attention, and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble. Stream it live July 27, 10pm-12am CDT right here on KRUU.

Legendary blues guitarist Buddy Guy will be turning 77 on the 30th of this month. He's played with Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, Junior Wells, Sonny Boy Williamson among many others, and despite having been on this earth for the better part of a century, he's still going strong. On his birthday he'll be giving all of us a gift: a brand spankin' new two-disc studio album called Rhythm & Blues.

On this Tuesday's edition of That Righteous Jive I'll be giving you a sneak peek of Buddy's new album (a week before its official release date). We'll also listen to his live album released last year, Live at Legends. On top of that we'll hear from Robert Randolph and the Family Band (with guest appearances by Carlos Santana and Trombone Shorty) off the album they released just last week: Lickety Split. Stream it live July 23, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.
