Cold Busted--a record label based out of LA--is quickly becoming one of my favorite trip-hop labels out there today. They've released a bunch of great albums this year from a bunch of great artists, and on today's edition of That Righteous Jive will be listening to two of my favorites: Sixfingerz' Music Beyond Belief and Boogie Belgique's Boogie Time

We'll also be checking out RJD2's new album More Is Than Isn't, which came out today. Stream it live 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Breakbeats, Trip-hop, and Downtempo On The After Hours

On this Saturday night’s edition of The After Hours I’ll be featuring two of my favorite downtempo albums of 2013: Pilote’s The Slowdown and Frenic’s Dr.DAD.

"Dr.DAD is a project based on samples from Frenic's father's record collection. He has made incisions into folk, prog-rock and blues then stitched these sounds together with trademark beats and bass. Once patients have undergone the full procedure they will be feeling a deep emotional response and be fully relaxed." -from back of album

We’ll also be listening to some great sample-based and breakbeat-laced trip-hop courtesy of Gramatik, Insight, ClassicBeatz, Question, Rob Swift, Soul Square, Dafuniks, and a whole lot more. Stream it live October 5th 10pm-12am CDT right here on KRUU radio.

On today's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be listening to some trip-hop featuring one of my favorite beat maestros, NYC-based producer Omega One.

We'll be checking out his 2008 album with rapper LoDeck, Postcards From The Third Rock. We'll also hear from DJ Ezasscul, Sound DefectsRuckus Roboticus, Will Magid, DJ Yoda and RSL. Stream it live October 1st, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

On this Tuesday's edition of That Righteous Jive we'll be listening to some of my favorite artists to have combined blues and gospel with electronica. I'll be featuring Nicolas Repac, a jazz guitarist and electronic music producer from France. We'll be hearing from the album he released last year, Black Box. We'll also hear from Skeewiff, an electronic duo from the UK, off the album they released last year Electro Swing & Gospel Breaks. On top of that we've got Rjd2Kruder & Dorfmeister, EuphonicDJ Nu-Mark, and C2C. Stream it live September 24th, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Contemporary Soul, Jazz & Funk On The After Hours Featuring Frootful

Nick Radford AKA Frootful is a jazz guitarist from the UK and a self-described "throwback chump", who lists 50's and 60’s soul, jazz, funk, latin, ska and R&B as some of his many musical influences. Earlier this week he released a new album entitled Heavyweight—the follow-up to his debut, 2011’s Colours.

On tonight’s edition of The After Hours we’ll be listening to some of my favorite tracks from both of Frootful’s albums. We’ll also hear some more soul, jazz and funk courtesy of Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra, Broken Brass Ensemble, Monophonics, Weeland and the Urban Soul Collective, The Fantastics!, Ikebe Shakedown and Visioneers—all from albums released in the last two years. Stream it live September 21st, 10pm-12am right here on KRUU radio.

2013 has been a great year for brass bands pushing the limits of their genre. Youngblood Brass Band just released Pax Volumi, their first album in six years. Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, an eight-piece brass band from Chicago consisting of the eight sons of jazz trumpeter Phil Cohran, released their most experimental album to date, Fly: The Customs Prelude. Broken Brass Ensemble, an eight-piece brass band from the Netherlands, released a self-titled debut album. And last but not least, Riot Jazz Brass Band, a nine-piece brass band based out of Manchester, released their debut album, Sousamaphone

On this Tuesday’s edition of That Righteous Jive we’ll be listening to some of my favorite tracks from all of the albums above. Though all of these groups are anchored in New Orleans style brass, they sail through realms of hip-hop, funk, and rock—all with a strong emphasis on percussion. If you want to hear how today’s brass bands are re-inventing the genre then be sure to tune in September 17th, 5-6pm CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Trip-Hop and Hip-Hop On The After Hours

I’ve got some brand-spankin’ new trip-hop for your brain to digest on this Saturday night’s edition of The After Hours.

I’ll be featuring Skeewiff, an electronic duo from the UK. We’ll hear from their new album Ghetto Latin & Broken Ballroom, which comes out this Monday, and from the album they released last May, Skeewiff vs Amphonic. We’ll also hear from the two albums they released last year, The Skeewiff Disco and Electro Swing & Gospel-Breaks.

Nightmares On Wax, another electronic music producer from the UK, will also be releasing a new album next week, entitled Feelin’ Good. We’ll be checking out some of my favorite tracks from it.

In the second hour of the show we’ll be listening to some hip-hop courtesy of A Tribe Called Quest, Tumi & The Volume, The Roots, Black Star, and Jurrassic 5. Stream it live September 14th, 10pm-12am right here on KRUU.

Contemporary Jazz On The After Hours Featuring Will Bernard

Will Bernard is a jazz-funk guitarist from San Francisco who knows how to kick-back and ride the groove. Last month he released a new album entitled Just Like Downtown

On this Saturday night's edition of The After Hours we'll be listening to Bernard's new album along with some of my favorite tracks from his last album, Outdoor Living.

Another one of my favorite jazz guitarists out there today, Charlie Hunter, will be releasing a new album next month, entitled Pucker. Once again Hunter has partnered up with drummer Scott Amendola to groove out some minimalistic and experimental jazz. We'll be hearing from Hunter and Amendola's last album, Not Getting Behind Is The New Getting Ahead, along with some select tracks from the rest of Hunter's discography.

On top of that we've got Ikebe Shakedown, Menahan Street Band, Robert Walter's 20th Congress, Youngblood Brass Band and more! Stream it live September 7th, 10pm-12am CDT right here on KRUU radio.

Man Man's new album, On Oni Pond, has leaked early. Tune in to KRUU at 5pm on today's edition of That Righteous Jive to catch a sneak peek of the album a week before its official release date.

We'll also be listening to some tracks from Youngblood Brass Band's new album Pax Volumi, also scheduled to come out next week.
