2013 Retrospective: Brass Band Edition

People often forget that jazz was the rebel music of its day—the kind that made the parents nervous and brought the kids down to the dance floor. And the horns, the brass, before electrical amplification, were truly the loudest and baddest instruments in all the land. 2013 has been a great year for brass bands bringing back that rebellious nature while at the same time pushing their genre to places it’s never been before. On this Saturday night’s edition of The After Hours we’ll be taking a look back at some of my favorite brass albums to have been released this year. On the roster we’ve got: Youngblood Brass Band, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Riot Jazz Brass Band, Billy Martin's Wicked KneeBroken Brass Ensemble, and Brass Knuckle Brass Band. Stream it live December 14, 10pm-12am CST right here on KRUU radio. (More info on artists and albums below)

2013 Retrospective: Afrobeat Edition

On this Tuesday’s edition of That Righteous Jive we’ll be listening to my favorite afrobeat of 2013. I’ll be featuring The Fontanelles, a group who originally formed to be the onstage band for the London run of Fela! The Musical. After the show ended they decided to name themselves after the part of a baby’s head where the bones don’t quite all come together and start making some great original afrobeat. And that’s exactly what they’ve done with their debut album (released earlier this month): Horns Of Freedom, which sticks with the afrobeat backbone but also ventures into realms of reggae, ethio-jazz and ska. We’ll be listening to some choice tracks off of The Fontanelles new album, plus a whole lot more great afobeat courtesy of Bosq of Whiskey Barons, Cherimoya, Ikebe Shakedown and Jungle Fire—all from albums released this year. Stream it live November 26th 5-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.

2013 Retrospective: Electro-Swing Edition

Nearly a century after its heyday, swing is making a comeback and once again bringing feet down to the floor. DJs and producers from all over the world are re-inventing the genre by mixing and mashing it with elements of hip-hop, house and EDM. So brush off your dancing shoes and grab your favorite gal, because on today’s of That Righteous Jive we’ll be listening my favorite electro-swing albums of 2013.

I’ll be featuring the Parov Stelar Trio, an electro-swing group from Austria based around DJ Parov Stelar. Stelar performs live with vocalist Cleo Panther, saxophonist Markus Ecklmayr (aka Max the Sax), and trumpeter Jerry Di Monza, among others. We’ll also here hear from Boogie Belgique (a producer from Belgium) Odjbox & Pierre (a duo from Britian) and Goldfish (a duo from South Africa). Stream it live November 19th 5-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.
