On this Tuesday's edition of That Righteous Jive I'll be featuring two of my favorite jazz & swing albums of 2013. The first is the self-titled debut from Bella Donna (top), a quartet from the Ozarks who plays a beautiful blend of gypsy jazz, swing and folk. From their bandcamp page: "Bella Donna is a jazz ensemble influenced by the Ozarks. The clacking of a tree limb in the middle of winter, the summer sound of cicadas and the rolling hills off of highway 65 help influence their sound to create what they like to call "Ozark Jazz"."
Secondly we've got The John Brothers Piano Company Quintet by The John Brothers Piano Company (left), an Oakland-based duo began in early 2010 by John Morgan and John Thatcher Boomer, who would alternate on the piano. As time passed Boomer switched to playing the clarinet and the group gained a drummer, trumpeter and bassist. For their first album as a quintet they re-worked older songs by The John Brothers as well as creating brand new material. The result is one of the best contemporary jazz albums I've ever heard. Be sure to check it out January 28th, 5-6pm CST right here on KRUU radio.
