Carrie Elkin & Danny Schmidt on Roots Rock Roadhouse

Lori McKenna on Roots Rock Roadhouse

This week we'll feature Boston singer-songwriter and mother of 5 children, Lori McKenna.  After playing open mics at age 27, she was introduced to Nashville by Mary Gauthier and negotiated a recording contract with Warner Brothers.  Lori has since released several albums and her songs have been recorded by Nashville artists like Tim McGraw and others.

Celebrating John Hiatt's Birthday on Roots Rock Roadhouse

This week we'll be celebrating the birthday (Aug 20th) of singer-songwriter, John Hiatt . Hiatt has had prolific career and his songs have been recorded by many of the great icons of music including Bonnie Raitt, Robben Ford, BB King, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, Willie Nelson, Joan Baez, Gregg Allman, Emmylou Harris, Rodney Crowel, Don Henley, David Crosby, Jewell, Rosanne Cash, Jeff Healey, Joe Cocker, Linda Ronstadt, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Jimmy Buffet and Buddy Guy to name a few.  We'll focus mainly on the albums, Bring the Family and Slow Turning, released in the late 80's and which I consider to be some of his finest work. His 2011 recording, Dirty Jeans and Mudslide Hymns will also be mined for musical gems.

Charlie Daniels' new album: Off The Grid- Doin It Dylan

This week we will celebrate the birthday of Robert Cray (August 1st) pictured below with Eric Clapton. With a special emphasis on his early album Strong Persuader which I consider to be a classic.

The music of Alison Krauss on Roots Rock Roadhouse

 

Alison Krauss was born in Illinois. She became a professional musician at age 14. She released her first solo album at the age of 16 and by age 21, she was a member of the Grand Ole Opry. Krauss has 25 Grammy Awards to her credit including six awards for her collaboration with former Led Zeppelin singer Robert Plant on the album Raising Sand (2007).

In celebration of her July 23rd birthday (age 43), we'll be featuring her music on this week's show including her solo work and her recordings with Union Station, Robert Plant and others.

We'll also hear music from Sarah Harmer, Sweet Talk Radio, Jackson Browne, The Vespers, Sam Phillips, Lyal Strickland, John & Jacob, Gregg Allman, Irene Kelly, Darden Smith, and more!

Barnaby Bright on Roots Rock Roadhouse

This week we'll feature an interview and live in-studio performance by the Nashville duo, Barnaby Bright.  This husband and wife duo, were the grand prize winners at the NY Song Circle competition and they've been featured on national television soundtracks for episodes of  ER and Days of our Lives. Their EP 'Gravity' was named one of the top 100 records of the year by Amazon. Barnaby Bright have played at the Lincoln Center and NPR's Mountain Stage and shared stages with the Lumineers and Norah Jones. They'll be appearing at Cafe Paradiso on Wednesday night, July 16th.

James Maddock on Roots Rock Roadhouse

This week we'll feature James Maddock and a live album he recorded while on tour in Italy.  Maddock is an English singer songwriter who lives in New York City. He combines vocal gravel with smooth rock melodies and heart moving lyrics to delight and tickle the listening ear. His band features top musical talent on mandolin, drums, bass, keyboard and guitar. Extended jams on some of his best known tunes will be the focus of this week's music session.
