Loren treasures the feeling of security young children experience when adults take time to read to them. Sarah writes middle grade and young adult novels, like Beyond Lucky and Believe, that inspire young people to thoughfully consider their views on leadership, friendship, and faith. Both authors have much to say during this episode of The Studio with Cheryl Fusco Johnson, pictured here with Loren Long.

Another great show lined up for you this week, brought to you by the Newsvandal JP Sottile and station manager James Moore. This week's triad of tiers include future tense, extinct possibilities, and last but least--women & children. Links to every headline discussed listed below.

And be sure and check out JP's latest piece entitled For America, Denial is a River in Iraq, a meditation on the rapidly deteriorating situation in Iraq, where two cities, Falluja and Ramadi, have recently fallen into the hands of militants opposing Iraq's govenment.

The Wolf Of Wall Street posterThe Oscar nominations are out and 5 of them, including Best Picture went to Martin Scorsese's The Wolf Of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio who's already won a Best Actor Golden Globe for this performance. "The wages of greed and excess portrayed in grand, operatic, often very funny style." "The sets are ravishing. The cinematography dazzles. There's so much going on that you don't blink for fear that you might miss something." - Rex Reed.

It starts Friday at the Fairfield Orpheum Theatre, along with the highly acclaimed documentary I Am Divine. "A warm, affectionate, even triumphant bio of John Waters' immortal leading "lady", Harris Glenn Milstead."

We'll cover the rest of the Oscar nominations; alert you to new releases; review The Wolf Of Wall Street, Philomena, and Nebraska, all Oscar nominated for Best Picture, and if time allows tell you of some very good films now available on video, including 20 Feet From Stardom, nominated for Best Documentary. We're the Filmosophers, with Chris Busch and Bruce Miller, "where we give our filmosophy of the movies and have filmosophical discussions." Fridays, 12:30 PM Central, again Sunday mornings 11:30.  - Was all this legal? Absolutely not, but we were making more money then we knew what to do with. - Jordan Belfort, The Wolf Of Wall Street

- Writer's Voice - 20140117- Anthony Horowitz

59:18 minutes (54.29 MB) Stereo 44kHz 128Kbps (CBR)

Anthony HorowitzIt's not every day that Monica and Caroline interview a writer and then see him on television that night - but the day that we recorded this in-depth interview with Anthony Horowitz, one of Britain's most popluar and best-loved writers who earlier this week was honored as an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (just two steps shy of knighthood), he was featured on the PBS special, "How Sherlock Changed the World."  That was due to his most recent adult novel, "House of Silk," a Sherlock Holmes novel written at the behest of the Conan Doyle Estate and publlished in November 2011.  (Sherlock changed the world because of the advances in crime detection that resulted from the methods employed in his fictional adventures).  The "House of Silk," by the way, reads just like Conan Doyle's books - and is one of the best novels I've read in years.

But that's not actually the book we are focusing on today, which is  "Russian Roulette: The Story of an Assassin."
