Good Kings Bad Kings"Good Kings Bad Kings: A Novel" by Susan Nussbaum, won the 2012 PEN/Bellwethr Prize for Socially Engaged Fiction, among many accolades. Well known novelist Barbara Kingsolver says "This is fiction at its best...A stunning accomplishment."  The LA Review of Books called it "an easy book to love and admire."

What makes this books such a standout?  Well, start with the fact that the main characters are living in an institution for young adults with disabilities, but the story is about their lives, not their disabilities.  Nussbaum herself was hit by a car when she was in her 20's, leaving her a wheelchair-user.  She became an acclaimed playwright and disability rights activist.  In an aritcle for Huffington Post, Nussbaum wrote "Can't there ever be a disabled character in a book or film just because?  where the topic doesn't ever come up?  All sorts of interesting stories can be written about a disabled character... you know, just like real people."

Good Kings Bad Kings" is Nussbaum's first novel. Please join us this week on Writers' Voices to learn how this book came to be, and how it has made a difference.

- 20131212- Chad Elliott - Happy Hour

26:44 minutes (24.47 MB) Stereo 44kHz 128Kbps (CBR)

Join Happy Hour hosts Steve McLain and Kevin Riley as they talk to Chad Elliott live on KRUU FM.

Chad Elliott bought his first guitar at an Omaha pawn shop, a dreadnought next to the used guns and knives. He took it home, slowly taught himself to fingerpick and began transposing his poetry writing into original songs. Elliott always believed he’d be an artist. He spent his youthful years drawing, painting and sculpting, but the more he picked on those six-strings, the more he found familiar ground with his words and the imagery he strived to achieve on canvas. Songwriting became painting with his words and performing on stage became his new exhibition. Averaging over 150 shows per year, Elliott has been on the road for more than a decade performing a blend of Americana, roots and country music.

Tea LeavesOne of our greatest pleasures in life is starting off several days each week with a cup of black tea from India, Ceylon or Africa.  Rachel adds a touch of milk and a little sugar to our cups.  We stir, smell, taste, sigh, and sip.  It’s a magical experience.

A great espresso is just that, but it’s not tea.  The only other liquid that brings me a simillar type of pleasurable experience is when I am lucky enough to enjoy a special glass of wine.  Fascinating.  A realization just clicked inside that I connect both tea and wine with romance, which means they are  intimately intertwined with peak experiences Rachel and I have enjoyed together-quiet, leisurely breakfasts at home, a tea shop in Paris, afternoon tea at the Four Seasons, a dinner in a corner booth at Vetri, dinner with friends in Rome, and many other entrancing moments.
