Michael Kutcher, Inspirational SpeakerFor nearly 30 years Michael Kutcher (superstar Ashton's twin) divulged to very few people that he's struggled since birth from a mild form of cerebral palsy. Then he met Bella, a little girl afflicted with a severe form of CP. Bella can't speak so today Michael speaks for her. He advocates for people with disabilities by lobbying government officials and by accepting motivational speaking engagements. He also supports philanthropic groups, such as Reaching for the Stars (a foundation of hope for children with cerebral palsy), Organize (which encourages organ donation), and the Starkey Hearing Foundation

Michael embraces his philanthropic activities gracefully despite the demands of single parenting his young son and holding down a full-time job in the financial services industry. And he manages to do all this despite a plethora of lifelong health challenges, including a successful heart transplant at age 13. For Michael, the consequences of a mild form of CP encompass hearing loss, poor eyesight, weakness on the right side of his body, and a slight speech impediment. To learn how Ashton and the twins' parents helped Michael develop the 'I can do it' attitude that's enabled him to achieve incredible successes despite multiple health hurdles, tune in this week to The Studio with Cheryl and her very inspiring guest Michael Kutcher.

- Great Taste - 20150325 - Alice Randall

32:35 minutes (29.84 MB) Stereo 44kHz 128Kbps (CBR)

It was my good fortune to speak recently with Caroline Randall Williams and her mother, Alice Randall. They are the co-authors of Soul Food Love-Healthy Recipes Inspired by One Hundred Years of Cooking in a Black Family. I hope you will make the time to listen, buy the book, read their amazing story, and use the many creative recipes while creating your own kitchen legacy.

The book has two distinct parts-a narraSoul Food Lovetive written by Alice that tells the story of three generations of cooks in her family who each weighed more than 200 pounds, and the fourth generation's different story penned by Caroline, who refused to succumb to the same weight issues.   Caroline developed the recipes that make up the second part of the book.

This week, Alice discusses over 100 years of cooking in her family, stories of both the men and women.  She describes the historical reality of the kitchen from an insecure, scary place, to a spot filled with warmth and community, and how that positive change in the kitchen’s personality along with the rise of industrialization resulted in the current health issues affecting the African American community.

The message of Soul Food Love is powerful and inspiring.  Though it ostensibly deals with one African American family, the stories and recipes are tools that anyone can use.

Alice Randall is the bestselling author of four novels, and the writer of one of my all-time favorite country songs, "XXX's and OOO's (An American Girl)," sung by Trisha Yearwood.  For more information on Alice, who teaches at Vanderbilt University, check our her website.

Drawing on their formal jazz training and years of experience in the Iowa City music scene, Jack Lion is crafting a sound that is primarily ambient/electronic but influenced by improvised music. "I like to sample things onstage, and the band often improvises around the samples to create new sections of the song on the fly," explains Smith. "This gives the audience something unique every night and creates an interesting challenge for us."

Jack Lion has already recorded a Daytrotter session and performed at the Mission Creek Festival in Iowa City. The band is set to release the JAC EP in the summer of 2014, followed by a supporting tour in the fall. "I've never been so energized by a musical project" Morton says. “This is a now-or-never moment. I don’t anticipate playing in another band with the chemistry, artistry, and vision like that of Jack Lion."

Jack Lion is Brian Lewis Smith on trumpet, keyboard, and production, Drew Morton on bass, keyboard, and vocals, and Justin LeDuc on drumset and SPDS.

Grace Gillespie Carter, AuthorFriendship helped Grace Gillespie Carter access the fortitude to plan, write, revise & self-publish City of Three Rivers, her award-winning epic novel set in Dayton, Ohio. As school girls, she and lifelong friend Rachel Hyde bonded over their shared love of writing. Eventually, they vowed to support each other's efforts to get their books written and published. Now both have succeeded: in December Rachel released her novel, More than We Know.

Grace's book, City of Three Riverscontains an intriguing mix of colorful fictional and actual historic figures (like the Wright brothers and quirky entrepreneur John Patterson). This novel's setting in flood-prone Dayton heightens suspense. With deftly drawn characters and a multigenerational approach, Grace's novel has won accolades from Dayton's current mayor and a number of authors. It also captured second place in the inaugural Inkfingerz writing competition.

For a glimpse of how two friends urged each other on to self-publishing success, tune in this week to The Studio with Cheryl and Grace Gillespie Carter.

Inspiring is the one word that comes to mind when I think about this week’s show.  Both of my guests inspire me, and I believe you, the listener, will feel the same way after tuning in.  It’s very easy to become cynical looking at the devastation of our natural resources, and the plundering of the environment that goes on in a world dominated by industrial agriculture in the guise of feeding the ever-growing population of human beings.  I think a little cynicism may have just snuck through in the previous sentence.  BUT…..Deborah Madison and Fred Kirschenmann, through their words and actions, can pull us out of that dark spot where it’s too easy to become enmeshed in futility, and turn our attention to the immense change that is the reality of the present and future cultivation of our planet.

"I love Fairfield. People are open and accepting."

"It’s not easy to pigeon-hole the Iowa based Dylan Sires and Neighbors. They definitely have a solid command of melody in the tradition of power pop, and are influenced by The Beatles, Vampire Weekend and 50′s styled balladry."  --Powerpopaholic | "Sires’ sound is a delightful mash-up: Beatles-esque harmonies, rhythm syncopation ala Modest Mouse, and guitars that hail from all over. Yes, if your normal bill of goods is something harder and faster, Sires’ pop sensibilities will come off as milquetoast. But variety is the spice of life, folks."  --Chad Taylor Des Moines Cityview magazine

Intellectual Rapper Chris TIME Steele - Newstalgia & Advocating for Humanity!

http://christimesteele.tumblr.com/tagged/newstalgia

Ft, ChrisTimeSteele.tumblr.com     NEWSTALGIA - a personal/political compilation.

Speaking from the heart & Rapping from the soul, TIME is 1 of the activists/journalists & mentors saving the world & opening minds 1 track at a time :) With HUMANISM & EQUALITY he teaches us diversity of tactics, SOLIDARITY, boycotts, marches DIRECT ACTION & more.  We talk about 'music, police violence & resistance' as well as critical literature.

The Anarchist/Activist/Journalist Intellectual Rapper TIME is quickly becoming one of my personal heroes & role models! TIME is For Sure In The Musical Family - Shout out to our colleagues Kyle Jones & Dwayne Wilson!

This morning TIME is probably checking in with or writing for www.Truth-Out.org or www.DemocracyNow.org

Chris'TIME'Steele Speaks fluently of international & local police brutality, oppression & empowerment in uniting CopWatch, Occupy & similar HR organizations & communities overground & underground in #solidarity. He also uses #speakout to expose ongoing gentrification, the function of video and visibility and DIVERSITY OF TACTICS while paying respects to many of those whose lives have been taken directly by racist police brutality.  TIME praises Michelle Alexander's latest book The New Jim Crow "EXPOSING Mass Incarceration .... in modern America." & tells us about his own participation in DIRECT ACTION to eradicate this new systemic slavery. The goal is equality & accountability!

TIME continues receiving notable critical acclaim for his music - "TIME is the future of indie hip-hop"-URB; TIME was picked as one of URB's Next 100 Artists for MTV2 On The Rise! A Hip-Hop artist from the mid-west, he has toured Europe, US & the Vans Warped Tour; TIME has worked with Kool Keith, Jake One, Budo, Sole, Ix Xiu, & did production on Common's album The Dreamer/The Believer! TIME was most recently noted in a 2Pac & a Meek Mill book!  We get a radio preview of TIME's upcoming album with Jason Horodyski on 'BREAM' (Banks Rule Everything Around Me)

Ceschi Ramos Music - they're saying 1 fellow can do it all!?!...

ceschi ramos

Ceschi Ramos & his music label Fake Four have saved mountains & walked skylines... sounds impossible & that is exactly why you have to hear it for yourself in his own words.  While I'm writing this he is flying out of the country on another solo international tour & concurrently operating his independent music label.  Yes, some of the art work & song titles are shocking; in this instance & from this distance it is what it is.  Like it or not his song lyrics walk a longing search for Equality & Humanity.  Word has it that Ceschi's acoustic guitar, laptop & voice make up his notable Folk / Rap / Hip Hop / Indie Rock / Punk band...  Peace.
