CowboyJimmie Rodgers

"So I drank myself my whiskey and dreamed I was cowboy and rode down to the border". Maybe it's the end of summer, the heat and the sunbaked grass turning brown, but I've been having cowboy dreams. So for this week's show I'll be heading for the border, just like in the Lyle Lovett song, and exploring some different musical genres. I'll celebrate the birth of the Jimmie Rodgers, who some call "The Father of Country Music", by playing some country, but also some blue grass and even a little blues. Hope you tag along and tune in, Friday at 8 PM on KRUU.

KRUU's own Keith DeBoer sat down with Nathan and Rebecca Bliss, the melodic brains and beauty that comprise the soul of Barnaby Bright.  The duo, named after the summer soltice, drove for hours in the early morning (after a late night show) so they could arrive at KRUU's studio in advance of their evening double bill with The Sea, The Sea (opening song before this interview). What ensued was manic conversation, punch drunk laughter and an amazing 2 song, in-studio performance.

Nathan and Rebecca are two modern day troubadours, averaging  40,000 miles a year to places like London, Amsterdam, and New York's Lincoln Center. They've appeared on stage with bands like the Lumineers and Norah Jones. Their multiple guitars, harmonium, banjo, ukulele, floorboard bass, thumb pianos and keyboards yield creative instrumentation, stellar harmonies and a stage show that places them at the top of our short list of Indie-folk duos you do not want to miss.

Ellis Delany

Ellis. Who hasn’t heard Ellis. Fairfield has fallen in love with her. She packs Cafe Paradiso every time she plays. The phenomenon is however not unique. She seems to have this effect wherever she goes. Ellis is quietly amassing a loyal following of supporters across the country.

After her Feb 2013 appearance on A Prairie Home Companion, Ellis’ music charted in the Folk Top 100 in iTunes and Folk Top 20 on She also received hundreds of messages from strangers including, "you exude pure joy", "I heard you and fell in love" and “I was stopped in my tracks by your music and captivating laugh” as well as "Yours is a voice we all need to hear.” Ellis’ performances are transformational; she leaves her audiences better than she finds them, with softened edges & opened hearts.

Tune in to Lyrical Venus Wednesday morning for a live call-in from this amazing artist.  She will be appearing at Cafe Paradiso on Saturday, April 12th at 8pm
